adjective

1.
relating to or believing in the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities.

Our mission!

Egaliteria is women supporting women through the collaborative experience of food. We aim to shift the food industry toward egalitarian outcomes by fostering development, encouraging women in leadership positions and hosting dinners that celebrate, curate, encourage and inspire creativity and community.

Egaliteria is a play on the words "egalitarian" and "cafeteria". We somehow got "gal" in there too!

What are we?

We are an all female chef collective seeking to become a resource for other female back of house workers. We want to provide help for those who seek advice, mentorship, support, solidarity or simply camaraderie with people who have been where they are. As we grow, we aim to add new members, new events and additional resources to our group. Through our events we will bring attention towards and generate conversation about the current state of the industry, and how we can help facilitate and foster change.  Have a suggestion for an event? Please email us at [email redacted] and thanks!

Some important A’s to your Q’s:

What do you hope to accomplish with this money if you raise it?

The money we raise on Go Fund Me will go towards the venue (Lee's ) for our first pop up dinner that is both super functional and beautiful: a perfect backdrop to appreciate artwork, good food and a few hours of good fellowship.

It will also cover the cost of the food. We have tried to create a menu that is focused on the amazing availability that early spring garners us as chefs. The better your ingredients, the less adulteration is needed to get to delicious and beautiful. We believe that the cost of real food is secondary to the experience it gives us, so that the focus isn’t on the food itself, but rather collaborative spirit it takes to cook together in a kitchen.

What do you plan to do with the group at the dinner(s)?

No formality is involved in the dinner, we hope the food, artwork and sense of community of like-minded people forgathering will spark a thoughtful discourse about how to further support women who work in the back of the house in NYC. I would love to see this evolve into a resource for women who are looking for jobs, looking to diversify their repertoire, take a class, learn in other kitchens, and become more well rounded in their work.  This is the first of many dinners we will curate and execute.

When and where is the first event?

Our first dinner is on Friday, April 12th, 2019 at Lee's Private Dining Room on Canal Street in Chinatown. Check it out here.

Can I donate to the event if I don’t plan on attending?

Absolutely. We appreciate donations from folks who can’t be with us physically. We consider them kindred spirits!

When is the deadline to donate?

Last pledges will need to be received by April 3rd!

What will the flow of the evening be like?

When guests arrive, there will be an hour to appreciate the cocktail menu and some stationary appetizers. We will have a seated dinner (and more drinks), and take a few moments to thank the chefs for all their hard work. If there are any questions or conversations that arise we can discuss them collectively or just eat hearty and enjoy ourselves!

Talk about the artist?

We have Jessica Bottalico showing her work during the event.

Go check out her work here.

A bit about Jessica:

Living and working in Beacon, NY, Jessica Bottalico examines the narrative behind mundane objects that occupy domestic spaces and landscapes. Bottalico completed her BFA at Maryland Institute College of  Art and MFA in Painting at Rutgers University. Recent exhibitions include J Cacciola Gallery, Bronx Community College, Zurcher Gallery, Causey Contemporary, Proto Gallery, and Abrons Arts Center.

Talk about the chefs?

My name is Sara Antes. I've been working in kitchens for nearly ten years, and I'm currently the head chef at Taylor St Baristas in Manhattan. I have always found the most rewarding part of my job getting the opportunity to teach and collaborate.

Jessica Tree and I have worked together in many different types of kitchens, from our first kitchen experiences at The Fat Radish on Orchard Street to running the line out at Ruschmeyers in Montauk. She is methodical, calm and exceptional at her job. There is a trust and ease of partnership we have that I have profoundly missed not working with her, and am excited to see expressed in a collaboration.

Rachel Nichols is a fantastic chef I met through our work together at The Smile. She is collaborative, kind, in command and wonderful to work with. I couldn’t think of two people I’d rather partner with.

Thank you so much for your interest in and support of Egaliteria. We see this first dinner as a catalyst for creating an open resource available to anyone in the back of the house who needs or wants it.
