Re-planting a flooded forest after fire disaster

RE-PLANTING A FLOODED FOREST AFTER FIRE DEVASTATION

Prek Toal is a 'floating village' on the shores of Cambodia's great lake, Tonle Sap. The villagers rely on the lake for their livelihood. Families mostly engage in fishing and related activities and many have lived in their 'floating' houses for many years.

But there’s a problem
Our villagers depend on the nearby forests for the health of the environment and their survival. The forests maintain the balance in the ecosystem.  They are an essential element in the quality of the habitats for the many unique birds and animals in our heritage listed environment. The forests are a key part of the livelihood of our community.  We live in our environment and need it to be healthy.

In April 2016 a wide-spread forest fire burnt more than 7,000 hectares and threatened the Prek Toal village. Houses were damaged, but loss of life and loss of houses was prevented.

These fires continued to burn during the next dry season. There had never been a fire such as this and it affected villagers' future livelihood in many ways.

Here’s what we’re doing about it
The Greening Prek Toal project aims to keep the unique environment green and also maintain a sustainable economic and natural environment for the current and future community. It is an on-going project and we aim to plant at least 2,000 trees each year to renew the forest.

We have already planted many thousands of small trees that were grown by the villagers themselves, but we need funds to keep this project alive.

You can join us
Our first re-planting was held in 2017. We hope to continue re-planting  trees in the flooded forest.

With your donation as follows we can make a big difference:
>  US$5 will provide 1 small flooded forest tree
>  US$50, will provide 10 small flooded forest trees

As well as re-growing the flooded forest, all the villagers want to decreasing the effects of climate change and demonstrating to other floating villages how important it is to improve our environment.

Successful completion of the first re-planting

The first re-planting was held 26 March, 2017.  It was a community effort, with many supporters - local and international.  Our partners and sponsors have been generous with their time and effort.  However, now we need funds to keep the project alive and continue the project every March.

We would welcome donors to come to Prek Toal and see the trees in the future and help us celebrate success in the future.
