Help Children & Families in Direct Provision this Holiday Season
The elbowroom escape needs you to help children and families in Direct Provision this Holiday Season.
Our plan is to give the experience of family living over Christmas and help these families gain back independence in a beautiful rural environment.
With your generosity, we can offer a sense of family life and organise activities for the families including, forest school, hiking, craft workshops, games and lots of fun.
Desperate Conditions
There are currently 1,420 vulnerable children living within the direct provision service. Subjected to a modern-day form of institutionalism these families repeatedly speak of trying to live as normal life as possible whilst in all essence being subject to desperate conditions. Many of these families desperate situations seeking asylum only come to Ireland to find themselves essentially imprisoned with little chance of an ordinary family life.
The elbowroom escape would like to offer their lovely mountain lodge to groups of families to help support normal family life. Firstly this Christmas, then with continued support on an ongoing basis to offer more families the opportunities we are looking to provide.
What is it Like Living in Direct Provision
Hundreds of children have been born into Direct Provision and do not know any other life but institutionalised living. The lives of residents are governed by unnecessarily restrictive rules which can feel to residents like living in an ‘open prison’. Lack of privacy is a significant issue.
Instead of affording opportunities to contribute, they and their parents are being forced into a life of mundane existence living on a shoestring allocated allowance of 21.60eur with little hope of bringing Christmas joy.
This is not a supportive or integrative environment, it is damaging for these people and their children.
We Need Your Help
We are working with Direct Provision residents and their representatives directly to bring groups of families for overnight stays at The elbowroom escape . We are starting with a Christmas break and once successful we hope to bring other families for a holiday in the future.
Here they will enjoy a beautiful space in the Wicklow mountains, with a fully stocked professional kitchen in which to prepare family meals.
What Your Donation Means
Your money will directly and transparently help this amazing experience happen.
All proceeds raised will be used to cover the cost of transport, food & gifts for our guests and their families.
The more money we raise, the more families we can host over Christmas and organise future holidays.
A Christmas Holiday to Remember
Please donate and make this A Christmas Holiday to Remember for these families, at “The elbowroom escape” in Donard, Co. Wicklow.
