Daysha Eaton Reporter/Standing Rock

Donation protected
Daysha Eaton is an award-winning Alaskan journalist covering a breaking and historical event at Standing Rock (SR), North Dakota.  Thousands of Native Americans and their allies calling themselves “water protectors” have camped near the Missouri River, attempting to halt the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).  They claim that installation of this pipeline could result in pollution of the drinking water for thousands of Americans.

Daysha has reported on the eyewitness accounts of potential human rights violations allegedly committed by DAPL and law enforcement at SR against the water protectors including use of fire hoses, tear gas, mace and possibly percussion grenades resulting in arrests and serious injury.  In this age of social media rumors abound and with the events at SR unfolding so rapidly, it is necessary that trained journalists such as Daysha report only verified information.

Daysha has published SR stories with Alaska Public Radio Network, National Native News and NPR.  She has interviewed Alaska Native people at the SR camps to report their unique perspectives which are largely ignored by mainstream media.  Her stories have informed Alaskans about the “water is life” and “No DAPL” movements and many have made the journey to SR.

So far, Daysha has used her own money and vacation time to fund her stay at SR because the small public radio station that employs her does not have the funds to support her on location reporting and as a free-lance journalist, she typically earns fifty dollars a day.  Without financial assistance, Daysha, the only Alaskan reporter on site, will be unable to continue this important work.  In addition, it is essential that she cover the events of December 4-7  when more than 1500 veterans are slated to arrive at Standing Rock to stand with the water protectors.

Please consider funding Daysha’s continued stay at SR so she can report this monumental story.

WHAT THE FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR:

1)       A rental car:  because the SR camps are so remote and internet connectivity and cell phone reception is so poor, Daysha has had to hitch rides 60 miles into Bismark to speak with her editors and submit stories, then hitch 60 miles back to the camp.

2)      Hotel rooms: a hotel room would enable Daysha to have a place to use her computer and cell phone rather than using the casino or airport.  It would also improve her safety in the frigid cold; up to this point, Daysha has been staying in a tent.

3)     Flights: Daysha had to take a break from her work and she needs to fly back to Standing Rock. When she's finished her work, she'll need a flight back to Alaska.

WHEN ARE THE FUNDS NEEDED:
Immediately!

Daysha will be so grateful for your contributions to allow her to continue to report this story
