Charlottesville for Reasonable Health Insurance needs your help to take on the insurance company.
Since November 2017, Charlottesville for Reasonable Health Insurance (CRHI) has grown from a consumer grievance Facebook group into a full-fledged lobbying force tackling the out-of-control growth of health insurance premiums in and around Charlottesville, Va. We need your help to continue our work.
At first it seemed the tripling of local insurance premiums - the highest rates hike in the U.S . - were the result of market destabilization brought on by actions of the Executive Branch and the departure of Anthem Blue Cross from our local individual market. But after meetings with Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, Representative Tom Garrett, the Virginia Bureau of Insurance and the board of Optima Health itself, it has become apparent that Charlottesville is the victim of corporate malfeasance at worst and irresponsible price fixing at best.
We believe that Optima Health is using factors not allowed by law calculating rates for our region and we are now working with prominent healthcare attorney Jay Angoff to appeal to Optima Health to reduce our rates. But this effort requires resources. Please consider donating to our campaign to help reach our goal of $15,000. The money goes to legal fees and expenses associated with this campaign.
We cannot allow companies to exploit weaknesses in non-profit law and poorly regulated healthcare markets at the expense of the citizens of Virginia. Though the people directly affected by this gouging are middle class families and small business owners, it should be understood that federally subsidized plans for lower income ACA-eligible individuals are paid at the same rates. Ultimately, every taxpayer is paying the bill for Optima Health’s overreach.
