Embark on this mission with us, make a difference as ocean stewards!
Hello! Our names are Marina Garmendia and Isabela Rios together we created Coralisma. Coralisma is a non-profit project dedicated to the restoration, preservation and education of coral reefs in the Riviera Maya. With this project we will replant 600 corals onto the reefs of Playa del Carmen, Mexico by the end of 2019. We have already planted the first 10 coral tree nursery of Staghorn coral in Mexico. We plan to restore two important reefs in Playa del Carmen (Chun-zumbul and Shangri-la), while doing research with INAPESCA (CRIAP Puerto Morelos).
The first stage of the project has been successfully completed. In December 2018 we planted our nursery with 10 structures in the waters of Playa del Carmen. Our nursery is located at the sand patch at the end of Shangri-La, one of the reefs we will be restoring in August Pictures of the nursery can be found in the PowerPoints linked below (All pictures are taken from our coral nursery by members of the project or volunteers).
Our objective is to out-plant these 600 corals onto the reefs by August 2019. The last stage of our project is the outplanting of our grown corals onto Playa del Carmen’s reefs (Chuzum-bul and Shangri-La). We want to do this in the best, most ecologically friendly way. However, the proper materials are expensive. Therefore, we created this gofundme as a fundraiser for the needed equipment. Corals are the base of the oceans and they need our help! We are grateful for ANY amount of money you are willing to donate.
We are looking for any type of support. If this project motivates you and you want to dive deeper into it, we are also in search of Scuba diving volunteers. From January to August we need volunteers to clean the coral trees. How can YOU volunteer? It’s easy! We have partnered with Phantom Divers, a local dive shop in Playa del Carmen, to help in the cleaning of our nursery. If you are interested in volunteering head over to Phantom Divers (location) and ask to participate in a coral tree nursery clean. A regular diving charge will be given for cleaning the trees. Cleans will be done every two weeks, for more information go to the itinerary attached to the PowerPoint. Our corals will only be healthy if people care and maintain them. Please embark on this mission with us and be a helping hand in restoring our oceans. Your participation in this restoration will make an everlasting difference in our oceans.
