Cooking for & Feeding Refugees

In March 2016 I had the honor and privilege to cook for and feed thousands of refugees in France at the notorious Jungle in Calais as well as at the new camp in Dunkirk.
I volunteered with Refugee Community Kitchen, a group of chefs, caterers and activists who came together a little over a year ago to offer assistance in the form of nourishing meals and access to fresh food daily.
RCK cooks every day, 7 days a week, having served over 570,000 meals since December 2015. This organization is 100% volunteer run, supported and funded with food and cash donations generated through local fund raising events in the UK. In addition to cooking and serving food, RCK has built an idustrial kitchen in Calais, created a food distribution facility, supported and built communal kitchens, bakeries, and free shops in several camps in Northern France.
This little boy reminded me of when my own son was little, and my heart broke. Imagine what it feels like to be a parent under these circumstances.
Although the Jungle was razed by the French government in October 2016, there remain thousands of refugees in the nearby Dunkirk camp. I'm asking for your help buying food for me to cook and serve. Most of the chefs are from the UK, and bring their donated supplies with them. Coming from California, I don't really have that option, instead I purchase in bulk locally in France.
Last year, as I drove back to Paris from Calais with a heavy heart, I saw this rainbow. It reminded me of the goodness and peace we have in the world, amid all the darkness. The world is very broken right now and I'm doing what I can to help repair it, doing what I know how to do: cooking and being kind.
