Concern Of Police Survivors - COPS

Tax deductible
Hello, my name is Austin Lauridsen.

I took it upon my self to make an effort in raising awareness for police officer safety and helping those that are left coping with the loss of a family member, friend, or co-worker.

I have decided to run a local half marathon in Duluth Minnesota (Grandma's Marathon) while wearing a (25-30LB) protective vest plate carrier, as a challenge and effort in this awareness of Police safety and Survivor support! This marathon is held on June 16th and is 13.1 miles long.

In April of 2006 my family lost a close friend and Chief of Police in the small town Chelsea, Michigan. While in attendance of this hero's funeral I realized how large of a brotherhood and sisterhood there is in emergency services. The Chief left behind a wonderful family, a wife and two young children. Since this tragic event, I have been very passionate in supporting those in emergency services but have never taken the step to support those directly affected, This is my attempt to raise awareness and funding for those left behind!

To make this happen I chose the national organization C.O.P.S. (Concerns Of Police Survivors). I spoke with a representative and asked for their mission statement, I wanted to be sure this was an organization that stands firmly behind supporting those who cope with this type of loss. I was introduced to all the programs C.O.P.S had to offer.  With that information I decided to move forward with the "Kids Camp". This particular program helps the children that are left behind, dealing with a tragic loss that will never leave their eyes and forever stay with them. Kids camp is directly aimed towards kids in the age range of six to fourteen. The camp brings youth together to celebrate, socialize and participate in outdoor activities such as: swimming, fishing, canoeing, archery and related activities. All donations will be transfered directly to the C.O.P.S. Organization.

My goal is to raise 20,000$ USD to change the lives of many that cope with such a tragic loss. I ask you to join me in helping make the difference in these individuals lives. I encourage everyone to read the following description of the C.O.P.S. organization and explore the attached link to this story.

Thank you all for you help and support, God Bless.

Each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss.  C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives. There is no membership fee to join C.O.P.S., for the price paid is already too high.

C.O.P.S. was organized in 1984 with 110 individual members.  Today C.O.P.S. membership is over 47,000 survivors. Survivors include spouses, children, parents, siblings, significant others, and affected co-workers of officers killed in the line of duty according to Federal government criteria.  C.O.P.S. is governed by a National Board of law enforcement survivors. All programs and services are administered by the National Office in Camdenton, Missouri. C.O.P.S. has over 50 Chapters nationwide that work with survivors at the grass-roots level.

C.O.P.S. programs for survivors include the National Police Survivors' Conference held each May during National Police Week, scholarships, peer-support at the national, state, and local levels, "C.O.P.S. Kids" counseling reimbursement program, the "C.O.P.S. Kids" Summer Camp, "C.O.P.S. Teens" Outward Bound experience for young adults, special retreats for spouses, parents, siblings, adult children, extended family, and co-workers, trial and parole support, and other assistance programs.

C.O.P.S. knows that a survivor's level of distress is directly affected by the agency's response to the tragedy.  C.O.P.S., therefore, offers training and assistance to law enforcement agencies nationwide on how to respond to the tragic loss of a member of the law enforcement profession.  C.O.P.S. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. C.O.P.S. programs and services are funded by grants and donations.

C.O.P.S. provides Hands-On Programs designed specifically for each survivorship to help rebuild their shattered lives.  These programs allow survivors to receive support from peers who know how they feel, attend seminar sessions designed for their needs and obtain resources to help them on their journey of grief and coping.  Our programs are free to survivors to attend. The only cost to the survivors is their travel to and from the program. In 2017, we had 1,070 survivors from 42 states attend our Hands-On Programs.
