Computer for Handicap Artist

Since moving into an apartment four years ago to become more independent, Larry Costello, who has struggled with quadriplegia, memory deficits and speech impairments for the past 40 years, has been unable to create his impressive graphic art. With his disability, he requires a desktop computer and Adobe Illustrator in order to build his colorful works. He does not have the wherewithal to purchase either one. To assist Larry, I  have created this GoFundMe campaign to obtain $1,450 to help purchase an iMac and software so that Larry has a means to express himself through creativity and share his talents.

I came to know Larry after one of his friends reached out to the library where I work asking to feature his work — Larry has long had a dream to show his graphic artwork in the Hamptons. That dream finally came true in January 2019, when the Westhampton Free Library selected his work to be featured as part of its rotating art gallery.

On Jan. 5, a special artist reception was held for the thankful artist, who has struggled with quadriplegia, memory deficits and speech impairments for the past 40 years. In 1979, just before turning 25, Larry suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling asleep while driving, careening into Lake Oswego and nearly drowning. He had been heading home from his job in upstate New York, where he taught art and communication skills to handicapped students.

Larry always had a love of art, and before obtaining his degree from Dowling College to teach special education, he worked in advertising art and design.

With his new and his dominant left hand completely paralyzed, however, Larry wasn’t sure how he could continue as an artist. Then, during the 33 years he spent living in a nursing home and rehabilitation center, Larry slowly learned to use his right hand to maneuver a mouse and create artwork in Adobe Illustrator.

His vibrant works allow him to connect himself to the outside world and share his talents with his fellow man. His work has been on exhibit at Hofstra University, the Disabled Artists’ Guild at Port Jefferson Gallery and the East End Arts Council.

Please consider assisting me in helping to purchase the equipment Larry needs to continue his art.
