Clean Air for Southall and Hayes

(I tried unsuccesfully to delete this one - all funds donated here have been transferred) Residents of Southall and Hayes are being adversely effected by the redevelopment of the old gasworks site (Southall Waterside) where 6,000 new homes are planned, We have been experiencing an offensive odour for over a year, and have learnt that this contains carcinogenic benzene. We are informed that this is caused by the 'soil hospital' which, in the open air, is removing benzene as well as asbestos, arsenic and cyanide from the earth. These dangerous chemicals have built up in the soil since the 1930s while coal tar processing happened on the site. We are campaigning to stop Berkeley Homes developing the site, at least until effective measures are put in place to prevent residents experiencing adverse effects. Residents already report health impacts including asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, vomiting and fatigue (all known effects of benzene poisoning) as well as problems with dust, noise, traffic and seismic waves (vibrations). We already raised around £400 with local donations but need more: 1. To raise awareness of the campaign via posters, leaflets etc. 2. To gather scientifically valid evidence about the health impacts of the development 3. To launch legal action to prevent any further impacts and to get compensation for those effected. Southall is one of the most deprived areas in the borough of Ealing and in London and residents are not generally in a position to financially support themselves in these actions. Your donation will mean a great deal to residents who are struggling with getting the right people to take notice and to stop the development causing them physical and mental health impacts.
