My name is Lindsey, I am writing this on behalf of my sister, Christy Luke who is in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible van for herself. She is a single mother of two who lives in Port Perry. Christy has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy as well as Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was mobile up until five years ago, when a staph infection attacked her body and crushed her spinal cord. She had surgery to relieve the pressure on her spine. The damage to her spinal cord is irreversible causing her to be a quadraplegic. She spent almost a year in Toronto Western and Lindhurst rehab before coming home to live with her family. She has gained partial use of her upper body but will never walk again. We live in a friendly small town that unfortunately is not accessible friendly and has only one accessible transit service for medical appointments only and only in our region of Durham and has to be booked a few days in advance. There is no public transit service on the weekends either. She had purchased an older, well used wheelchair van thatwas used to be a taxi service, but unfortunately has broke down and is beyond repair. An accessible van for Christy would allow her to keep her doctors appointments out of town. It is important to have something in place for emergencies and it would also allow Christy the freedom to go to school functions for her son, shopping or somewhere other than the confines of her home. My mother and Christy's daughter also have Muscular Dystrophy and would greatly benefit the wheelchair van as well. My mom uses a walker and a scooter to get around. A wheelchair van would allow Christy and my mom to be an active and present member of the community. Your support in helping me raise funds for Christy in order to buy her this wheelchair accessible van would be an enormous help to my sister.
