Carrington West Charity Football Tournament – Supporting WaterAid

Carrington West Recruitment is proud to be hosting a 5-a-side charity football tournament this March in support of WaterAid, bringing together contractors and industry partners in the water and wastewater industry operating across the South East of England for a great cause.

The tournament will take place on Wednesday 25th March in Kent, with 10 teams competing for the top spot and the title of #1 on the day. The event promises fast-paced football, friendly competition, and an excellent opportunity for networking within the civil engineering, utilities, and infrastructure sectors.

All funds raised will go directly to WaterAid, supporting their vital work in providing clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene to communities around the world.

Whether you’re playing on the pitch or supporting from the sidelines, this event is a chance to connect with industry peers, enjoy a great day of football, and make a meaningful impact through sport.

I’m taking part in the Reading Santa Run this year to raise funds for WaterAid, an incredible charity helping communities around the world gain access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene. My 41st marathon takes me to Cairo, Egypt—running along the Pyramids of Giza for the duration of the 42.2km. This week’s run is for WaterAid, a charity dedicated to transforming lives across Africa and beyond through the power of clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene.

What is the struggle?

Across Africa, millions of people live without access to clean water. Children walk for miles every day, with some areas, such as Narok district in southwest Kenya, journeys may be up to 25 kilometres to fetch water that often isn’t safe to drink. Without clean water, families can’t stay healthy, children miss out on education, and communities are held back from building a better future. It’s not just about thirst—it’s about dignity, opportunity, and survival.

Why am I running for this cause?

Because clean water is the foundation of life. It’s something I’ve always been able to take for granted—turning on a tap, filling a glass, having a shower after a run. Yet for so many, these everyday actions are literally impossible. Running for WaterAid is my way of trying to help change that reality—because every person deserves the right to safe water, no matter where they’re born.

What is WaterAid and what do they do?

WaterAid is an international charity working across Africa. They bring clean water to villages, build safe toilets, and teach communities about hygiene. Their work not only saves lives, but also frees up time for children to attend school, helps women and girls gain independence, and creates healthier, stronger communities.

Your donation directly changes lives:

• £10 can provide soap and hygiene kits to a family.

• £25 helps install a tap in a community.

• £50 contributes to building a safe toilet block for a school.

• £100 supports a village to access clean water for generations.

Back in September of 2018, Monica cycled for WaterAid in Zambia and raised a little over £5,000. Since then WaterAid has held a special place in her heart, as it was the first big cycling trip she ever did.

Monica's interest in fresh water issues began many years before her Zambia experience, back when she was working on her PhD at London School of Economics whilst pregnant with Felix.

For her 60th birthday this year, all Monica wants is to be surrounded by family, friends, and the people that mean the most to her. However, the people in her life are incredibly generous, and keep asking what they can get her.

Monica does not need anything!

But, there are tons of people, especially women and girls who do need something - clean water. This is where WaterAid and all of you come in. This year lets raise money for the men, women, and children of the world who do not have access to fresh water. Let's give women safer birthing conditions, girls the ability to go to school with dignity every month, and everyone access to a basic human right, hygiene.

So, thank you to all of you who donate to this cause. It is one that Monica truly believes in, and is thankful she can share with the people she loves.

50 years ago, Dame Alice Owen's School moved from its old site in Angel, London to its new site in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. To commemorate the change of site, celebrate the school's environmental success, and raise money for WaterAid, we will be doing the entire 21.7km walk between the two sites on 7 October 2025. And we will leave at a time that ensures we get to school before the bell!
