Hope for Hearts - Supporting Myocarditis Research
Four years ago, I faced one of the most challenging experiences of my life. I was hospitalized and diagnosed with myopericarditis, a rare condition involving inflammation of both the heart and the sac surrounding it. The pain was excruciating. To put it into perspective, troponin—a protein that measures stress on the heart—typically reads 0.02. A reading of 10.0 is considered equivalent to a heart attack, and I was at a staggering 11.3.
When I inquired about the cause of my condition, the doctors provided me with a list of 400 potential triggers. In other words, they were as clueless as I was. Undeterred, I left the hospital, took my final exams, and returned home to consult with a cardiologist who had been advising the hospital throughout my stay. I was prescribed several medications to take multiple times a day for the next two years, and I was advised to keep my heart rate below 140 to prevent complications. However, after months of taking the pills, I noticed that I felt worse, so I decided to quit taking them.
Since then, myocarditis has become the poster child of the rare life-threatening side effects of the COVID vaccine. As experts continue to debate this issue, I'm reminded of the limited understanding surrounding the disease and how much we still have to learn.
Motivated by my experiences, I have chosen to run the Big Sur International Marathon alongside my all-time favorite teacher, Father Zobler. Our goal is to raise funds for myocarditis research, improve our understanding of this poorly understood disease, advance scientific knowledge, and demonstrate that a full recovery is not only possible but achievable.
All proceeds raised—100%—will go directly to the Myocarditis Foundation, an institution that shares our goals and is committed to making a difference.
