The Humane Bean Pet Rescue

Hello friends, my name is Cameryn Kennedy, Director of The Humane Bean Pet Rescue.

For 7 years, we have been providing free and low-cost veterinary care, fostering, and rescue services to Northeast Ohio.

This fundraiser is a bit different, it is not for a pet in our care. Rather; we are fundraising for a friend of the rescue and his beloved cat, Baby.

In 2023, our organization gained media traction and was contacted by a pet owner named John all the way from Cleveland!

John had never been a cat person before, until this young torbie cat started sitting on his porch every day. She twisted his arm into feeding her, and they quickly became close companions! John became everything Baby needed and this touched our hearts.

John named her Baby. He knew Baby wasn't spayed because of ...acts she had been participating in with neighborhood toms. He was worried about the stability of his housing if Baby were to bring home kittens. John was not able to get her to the vet on his own. So when he told us Baby's story, we called on our community to raise funds to get Baby spayed and vaccinated! We also collected essential cat supplies, and John kept Baby as his very own indoor cat. She and John are very happy and we at The Bean have been lucky enough to receive consistent updates since!

Unfortunately, the latest update we got on Baby was not as heartwarming as usual. We were informed that Baby has developed some sort of growth, cyst, or mass on her lower jaw. She is still eating, but we would like to get her looked at as soon as possible to understand what this is and get her help. Since John is elderly, lives alone, and is without transportation, he needs help with funding and transport to Baby's vet; the Cleveland APL. We hope to get Baby an exam and follow up with the treatment her doctor recommends.

We are starting with a $100 goal. A veterinarian exam and consultation costs $35, which is what we will begin with. We will update this fundraiser as we learn more about Baby's condition. Marshall was brought to us at 4.8lbs on April 23 by a good Samaritan who noticed she was dragging her legs. She came from a little village in Ohio called Marshallville, so her foster decided to call her Marshall!

Marshall had been through some sort of trauma which left her right rear limb damaged and pulled up towards her body while she walked, while painfully putting weight on broken toes on her left rear limb. She had been this way for a while, which led to the bones healing in the wrong positions, cellulitis, and painful septic arthritis-a bacterial infection in her joints.

Marshall was not a candidate for amputation due to the broken toes on her weight-bearing leg. Luckily, we were able to treat her and give her a chance at a better quality of life!

She is currently on bedrest, being given lots of fluids, and monitored through the day. She is being treated for her septic arthritis, and her pain is being managed around-the-clock.

X-Rays:

Shadow and her four babies were rescued on June 7 after one of Shadow's babies was killed and the rest of the family was threatened by a cruel human.

Shadow the young nursing mother cat and her four 3-week-old kittens are currently in foster care with The Humane Bean despite a previous pause on intakes due to lack of funding. We need all the help we can get to support these babies during this time.

In Fall 2025, the kittens and mama will all need vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, and microchips.

The kittens will need SNAP tests before going to forever-homes.

On April 23, 2025, the person who had been feeding Blondie for 17 years made the choice to have a local TNR volunteer bring her cat into a local veterinary clinic to be euthanized. It was said that Blondie had had litters of kittens every year that would die or be born deceased.

Upon arrival, Blondie was determined to have pyometra and advanced gingivitis. She was not a candidate for euthanasia, so her caretaker decided to relinquish ownership. Blondie was provided with a life-saving spay that day and recovered overnight with a volunteer, who promised her a better life from here on.

Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that can be prevented by spaying female cats and dogs. Left untreated, pyometra will rupture and send the body into sepsis, leading to death. Treatment for pyometra is always a spay.

It was determined that Blondie has no teeth, except two canines, which are infected and will need to be removed. We have tested Blondie for Heartworm, FIV, and FeLV and she was negative for all three. We also provided Blondie with a full senior bloodwork panel (CBC, Chem 15, TT4), which showed an elevated white blood cell count, which was to be expected.

We expect Blondie to make a full recovery, but we need a little help from our community to provide her with much needed dental care and paying off $140 in invoices from bloodwork on her intake day.

We are fully committed to giving Blondie the life she deserves, even if she had to wait for 17 years.

On a quick lunch break from work, I stopped to help a stranger. He thanked me and as I was about to leave, he pulled Sakari out of a backpack and asked me if I knew anyone who could care for her. She was 8 weeks old, underweight, and she had fleas. Her owner needed a miracle. At first, I was hesitant, it was the middle of kitten season, and I was busy. But eventually I came around and promised her owner I would get her the care she needed. I offered veterinary services for mom, but was told he did not have access to her.

Sakari was The Humane Bean's first foster-puppy. From the beginning, we were dedicated to doing right by her. At 9 weeks old, Sakari helped us rescue her first neonate kitten. After her initial vaccines and adjusting to her room, she was introduced to our other dogs and cats, who she learned to socialize with. Sakari was spayed at AlterClinic Animal Care on January 31, 2025!

When we picked Sakari up from her surgery, we were informed that she was nervous and shy, and that our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Brian had recommended puppy training to avoid future behavioral problems.

We are looking into a 6-week training program with one of our highly admired rescue partners, Columbus Humane. They are a low-cost resource for dog training and so much more, we are very excited to work with them!

Our course will cost a total of $225 and will be every Saturday morning for 6 weeks. We will be driving an hour and 40 minutes one way to get there for each class.

We have also added $7 to our goal amount to cover GoFundMe fees of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation, totaling our goal at $232.
