There are too many children born with hearing loss that goes left untreated on this planet. Many low-income countries do not have the resources or expertise to provide early identification and intervention services to address pediatric hearing loss. These children subsequently grow up in a noise-less world, putting them at an early disadvantage in life. 

I am passionate about this problem because I have witnessed what medical professionals and technology are capable of in fixing the problem of pediatric hearing loss in more fortunate nations like the United States. We are capable of providing children and infants with hearing loss early interventions and resources like newborn hearing screening, trained audiologists and speech therapists, hearing-aid equipment, and cochlear implant technology. There is nothing quite like witnessing a child smile after being able to hear for the first time. 

A person who has underwent this process first-hand is Paige Stringer, the Founder and Executive Director of the the Global Foundation For Children with Hearing Loss.  Paige was born with a significant hearing loss in the United States. She was identified with her hearing loss as a baby, immediately fit with hearing aids by audiology doctors, and provided with the early intervention support from speech therapists to learn how to listen and speak. She attended mainstream schools starting at kindergarten alongside her peers of typical hearing. She attended university on a full tennis scholarship and earned two Master's degrees, including one in Public Health. She worked for several years in business with Fortune 500 companies before leaving the corporate world in 2009 to start the Global Foundation For Children With Hearing Loss. Today, Paige dedicates her life to making the essential resources available in impoverished countries and communities to address the problem of pediatric hearing loss through her foundation. 

The Global Foundation For Children With Hearing Loss aims to make a direct and life-changing impact on babies and young children with hearing loss living in low and middle income countries by helping them access the early identification, hearing technology, and locally-based trained professionals they need to learn to listen and talk and reach their full potential. In Vietnam and Mongolia, they have  established newborn hearing screening technology and protocol, trained teachers and audiologists to teach children with hearing loss how to listen and speak, and provided these communities with the knowledge and tools to obtain hearing aid and cochlear implant technology. The foundation is currently working to expand into other countries that have requested its support.

My name is Max, and I live in Los Angeles County, California. I am raising money for an important cause, and I am asking you to help support this cause on my behalf.  If you can, I would like to ask you to stop and think about something for a moment: How do you use your hearing to live your life? Do you listen to music? Do you hear when someone needs something because they call you? And maybe you just love hearing the sounds of the world. Now imagine you didn’t have any of that or had less of that. Would your life be harder? I can tell you first-hand that life is harder being deaf even in just one ear. You are different from everyone else. You have to adjust differently than everyone else. You miss out. Now, of course, hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other hearing devices are a solution, but only for those who can afford them. I’m sorry to say that many people, all over the world, cannot. Having had hearing aids most of my life, and being mere months away from possibly getting a cochlear implant, I realized this, and it made me sad. So I decided to do something about it. 

I have partnered with the Global Foundation For Children With Hearing Loss, or the GFCHL (www.childrenwithhearingloss.org), to raise money for this important cause. The GFCHL is currently working in Mongolia to implement nationwide newborn hearing screening to identify hearing loss in infants shortly after birth. Early identification is essential for timely interventions to overcome the effect of hearing loss on a child’s development. GFCHL also provides training and resources for local professionals and families of children with hearing loss. I am raising money via GoFundMe to support GFCHL’s work. I encourage you to donate to this vital cause. Equipment and related supplies for newborn hearing screening are expensive, and prices for the required elements range from $25 to $2500. Training for Mongolian professionals on how to use the equipment is necessary and costs money as well as does educational support to help Mongolian families understand how to help their children with hearing loss develop listening and spoken language. This fundraiser will most likely end sometime in May, so please donate as soon as possible! Tax receipts WILL be provided by GoFundMe and PayPal.

  ‌THE MONTANATHON:
Dutch and Jim’s Excellent Backcountry Adventure
Dutch Pelger, an 11 year old from Missoula, Montana, was born with Sensorinueral Hearing Loss. At age 4 Dutch got his first pair of hearing aids and he hasn’t looked back! He is a fun-loving, active boy who loves running, doing crazy trampoline tricks, skiing, and hanging out with friends and his three siblings. 
Thankfully, our family is able to have insurance that provides him with really great hearing aids, which make his life so much bettter. Unfortunately, many kids around the world aren’t so lucky.
Dutch’s goal is to raise awareness about chidhood Hearing Loss while raising funds to support the great work done by The Global Foundation for Childhood Hearing Loss, an organization that provides hearing technology and support to children in low-income nations. 

We are so grateful for the help we’ve been given and want to pay it forward to others who aren’t as fortunate, hence the Montanathon.

THE DETAILS:
Dutch & Jim will be embarking on a ten day adventure into Montana’s rugged Backcountry beginning June 28, 2018. They will run, hike, backpack, float and bike.

1. They will start in Missoula and will run/hike/ backpack through the Rattlesnake Wilderness about 22 miles in mountainous terrain up to Gold Creek.

2. After a couple days of rest in Seeley Lake, they will meet up with some friends at Holland Lake and backpack about 30 miles deep into the Bob Marshall Wilderness to reach the South Fork of the Flathead River where they will be met by a pack team of mules that will haul in their raft and other supplies.

3. Then they will float a sixty mile section of the scenic South Fork of Flathead River ending at the Hungry Horse reservoir just outside Glacier National Park where they will meet up with Dutch’s siblings and Mom.

4. Then they will finish with a bike ride up the Going to the Sun road to Logan Pass in Glacier National Park where the adventure will end!



Our goal is to raise $10,000 . 100% of these tax-deductible donations will go directly to the awesome organization, Global Foundation for Children With Hearing Loss.
