For over two decades, ServeHAITI's St. Vincent de Paul Health Center in Grand-Bois, Haiti, has been a cornerstone of healthcare in this remote rural area. What started with one filing cabinet, has since grown into a full-scale medical records room bursting at the seams. After 20-years of relying exclusively on paper charting for documenting patient visits, this approach is no longer sustainable to provide effective care.

The staff spend countless hours each day sorting and archiving old records, struggling to create room for new ones. This process not only consumes valuable time but also reduces the physical space available for patient care. The reliance on shelves and paper records contributes to inefficiencies, with the lengthy serial registration process frustrating patients—particularly those with urgent needs—oftentimes leading to angry disruptions due to the long wait. Nurses also experience delays in accessing patient information as they need to wait for clerks to document, which can compromise the timely delivery of care.

Transitioning to a digital electronic medical record (EMR) system will be transformative for the health center. It will streamline administrative tasks, improve access to patient histories, and ensure more accurate and secure record-keeping. Additionally, the physical space reclaimed from paper storage can be repurposed to better serve patients, enabling a more effective and accommodating healthcare environment.

ServeHAITI, founded in 2001 by a dedicated group of volunteers, has always aimed to move beyond short-term aid. Our mission focuses on providing sustainable solutions that empower the people of Grand-Bois to build healthier, more economically viable communities. The adoption of an EMR system aligns with this mission, equipping the health center with modern tools to meet growing needs while preserving its capacity to deliver compassionate, community-centered care.

ServeHaiti is in need of 30 phones and 2 tablets for their health center in Grand Bois, Haiti. The current phones are 5 years old and unable to work with the new application that we need to collect data from the field. The phones are used by the 24 agents who go out in the field to register and monitor children via an App (CommCare) for our program called Medika Mamba (Peanut Butter Medicine). They also use the phones to take pictures and videos of the parents and their children and send them to the health center's doctors to capture any abnormalities with the children and their families. They also do classes on hygiene in the schools and record them on the phones and send them to other schools as well. The cost of the phones and tablets is $5000. We are committed to a community-centric process that will allow residents to build a thriving, self-sufficient Grand-Bois where every man, woman, and child has access to healthcare, education, economic opportunities, clean water and nutritious food.
