Kaleidoscope was born from a journey that began years ago in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)— a space where both beginnings and endings live side by side.
That’s where I met many babies and families that taught me how to navigate the space surrounding end-of life, and it is where I met Sedona. I was her NICU nurse when she entered the world far too soon, and later our journeys realigned when I became her in-home “neurocentric nanny,” helping her family navigate the tender, complicated realities of caring for a medically complex child at home.
Sedona's life guided me through my unexpected shift out of my profession as a NICU nurse, helping me reestablish my identity. Sedona taught me more about purpose, selflessness, and interconnectedness than any book or training ever could. Her life — and then her unexpected passing at just 17 months old— opened the doorway to something sacred, a more intimate encounter with Death in the Pediatric space, and a life changing experience in the intentional navigation of Grief. In the wake of her transition, her incredible parents created Sedona Butterfly Effect, a nonprofit continuing her legacy of light and love, honoring kids whose brains and bodies worked like Sedona's did, and helping them reach their fullest potential.
Through my own Grief, I felt called to expand her legacy, — to serve other families walking through the sacred threshold of Pediatric end-of-life including acute instances, difficult diagnoses, hospice journeys, moments of transition, and Grief. That calling led me to Death Doula training, and to meeting Tessie — a kindred soul with her own deep story of Grief, love, and devotion to this work. Tessie’s path weaves through theater, spiritual facilitation, retreat work, and project management— always centering the healing power of presence, creativity, and sacred expression. Her journey through Pediatric end-of-life of life, chronic illness, and navigating her own "Living Death" became a personal initiation into the heart of Grief and renewal. Together, we found our shared devotion of creating spaces where families can experience magic, transformation, and connection — even in the midst of heartbreak. A large group of butterflies is known as a kaleidoscope — with their beautiful, wonder-filled, ever-changing mosaic. Tessie and I are proud, humbled, and grateful to launch Kaleidoscope, a branch of Sedona Butterfly Effect dedicated to supporting families through Pediatric end-of-life journeys.
Kaleidoscope exists to honor the radiant, often fractured beauty of life — just like the shifting colors inside a kaleidoscope. Each family, each child, each story is a unique pattern of love, loss, legacy, and transformation.
Vision
At Kaleidoscope, we envision a world where every terminally ill child and their family are met with comfort, dignity, and unwavering support. We provide inclusive, community-rooted opportunities where children and their loved ones feel emotionally, spiritually, and logistically nurtured, even in life’s most difficult moments.
Mission
Kaleidoscope is a non-profit initiative that works in collaboration with Doulas, healthcare teams, therapeutic providers, and community partners, to:
- Educate: Bring visibility, guidance, and understanding to the pediatric end-of-life journey.
- Connect: Build a network of trained “Partners in Community” who work together to deliver integrative, non-medical care.
- Support: Provide equitable access to child- and family-centered services that honor each family’s values and needs.
Through Kaleidoscope, donations help to reduce barriers to resources, inspire systemic change, and leave a legacy of love and dignity for generations to come.
Our first fundraising goal of $15,000 will help us launch this mission:
* $500 to reimburse initial startup costs
* $2,500 for inventory, materials, and digital tools
* $12,000 toward care for our first two families, beginning January 2026
Ultimately, our dream is to fully fundraise the estimated $15,000 per family cost and grow our community of support beyond our initial service area of Los Angeles County.
Your donation to Kaleidoscope, under the 501(c)3 nonprofit umbrella of Sedona Butterfly Effect, is tax-deductible (Tax ID: 92-3036633), but more importantly, it’s soul-nourishing — helping families face one of life’s most sacred and tender passages with dignity, care, and love.
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us begin. Please openly share with your networks and communities. Help us turn grief’s broken glass into a Kaleidoscope, where every offering becomes a fragment of light and love.
