Nourishing our community goes beyond food — it's also about heart. 🫶 A special group of women — 👑 𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘴 𝘥𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 (𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴) — gathered for a class with our Community Health and Nutrition team, blending nutrition with gentle, mindful movement. Cooking zucchini pancakes and crunchy chicken salad together inspired new ways to use produce from Second Harvest food distributions. Our survey found 96% of Second Harvest neighbors cut back on food to afford essentials, as we now serve 1 in 6 residents monthly. What clients shared: 96% cut back on food for necessities 66% worry about healthcare costs 58% worry about rent or mortgage Nearly 9 in 10 households include someone employed, retired or living with a disability SNAP cuts add more strain on households already stretched thin. On a mission to make #CalFresh more accessible for every family. 🥬💚 At our CalFresh OPEN House, we were joined by Roseann, Santa Clara County's Business Policy Implementation Specialist, to discuss making programs accessible, clear and compassionate for our community. For 18 years, Roseann has bridged the gap between complex systems and the people they serve, leading trainings that help families navigate CalFresh with dignity. Roseann reflected on the barriers many face: "I don't think people really understand the limitations of some people who need access to these programs. People don't really know how hard it is." We were honored to welcome Katrina Rill, Chief of Staff for San Mateo County Supervisor Jackie Speier, to our food distribution at the College of San Mateo to see how we work with our community. 🧡 Joined by our CEO Leslie Bacho, COO Tom Clark, CPO Shobana Gubbi, board members (Maria Poveromo, Brian Birtwistle, Judith Guerrero) and staff (Jenny Dang, Mirella Osuna, Cassie Konicek), we rolled up our sleeves together to help connect neighbors with nutritious food and experience the power of community in action. The most meaningful part of the day was getting to know the people at the heart of our mission. Their stories and experiences remind us that this work is about more than food — it's about building a stronger, more connected community.
