They Have Water. Now They Need Clean, Safe Water to Drink
Our 2027 Goal: $60,000
Imagine turning on your faucet and having water come out, but not knowing whether it is safe to drink.
For the 710 residents of Buena Vista, Honduras, this is their reality.
Thanks to previous improvements made in 2026, every household in this rural community now has access to running water 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This was an incredible achievement after decades of unreliable water service.
But there is still one critical problem: The water reaching their homes is not safe to drink.
We need your help to change that.
Who We Are
PCWE (Partnership for Clean Water and Education) is dedicated to bringing safe, clean drinking water to communities in need.
Our premier partnership is with Agua Para el Pueblo (Water for the People), a Honduran nonprofit organization that works directly with rural communities to develop sustainable water and sanitation solutions.
Through the generosity of our donors, PCWE helps provide the funding, planning, and installation of clean water systems that permanently improve lives.
For 2027, we are asking for your support to complete the next important step for the community of Buena
Vista.
The Community of Buena Vista
Located in the municipality of Santa Rita, in the Department of Copán, Honduras, Buena Vista is home to approximately 710 people in 140 households.
Most families depend on farming to support their families, primarily growing corn and beans, with some also growing coffee. Many have limited financial resources and employment opportunities.
The community also has an elementary school with 62 students and a kindergarten serving another 28 young children.
For more than 35 years, Buena Vista struggled with an inadequate water system. Families often received water only a few hours twice a week. Forty families living in higher elevations had no connection to the water system at all.
During a particularly severe drought, the entire community went approximately two months without water.
A Major Achievement in 2026 – But One Challenge Remains
Working together with Agua Para el Pueblo, the community of Buena Vista made tremendous progress in 2026. A new water source was added, along with significant improvements to the existing water infrastructure.
These efforts finally made it possible for all 140 households to receive a continuous water supply, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For the first time, every family in the community has reliable access to water in their homes. This was a life-changing achievement after decades of water shortages and unreliable service.
But having access to water doesn't necessarily mean having safe drinking water. Water quality testing has revealed high levels of turbidity, particularly during the rainy season. This means the water contains suspended particles that can interfere with effective disinfection, making chlorination alone insufficient to ensure the water is safe to drink.
The next critical step is to install a proper water treatment system that will remove these particles before disinfection, ensuring families have access to water that is safe for drinking and everyday use.
Our 2027 Project – Bringing AguaClara Technology to Buena Vista
With your help, PCWE and Agua Para el Pueblo plan to install a prefabricated AguaClara drinking water treatment plant.
This specialized technology will treat the water before it enters the community's existing storage and distribution system.
The treatment process will reduce turbidity and improve water quality before final disinfection.
One of the most important features of AguaClara technology is that it operates without electricity or complicated mechanical equipment. This makes it particularly well suited for rural communities with limited financial and technical resources.
The project will include:
- Construction of a raised concrete platform and protective structure for the treatment plant.
- Manufacturing, transportation, and installation of the prefabricated AguaClara treatment plant.
- Training local community members to operate and maintain the facility.
- Testing and verification to ensure the treatment system is functioning properly.
- Working with the community Water Board to establish sustainable funding for ongoing operation and maintenance.
Where Your Money Goes
100% of all donations go directly toward the clean-water project.
Our PCWE volunteers pay their own travel and living expenses, so every dollar donated goes toward the materials, equipment, installation, and other project costs necessary to make this happen.
