OAKLAND ZOO

The Oakland Zoo (Conservation Society of California) has been closed since March and we are hoping it will reopen soon under very safe/controlled measures.

Many are not aware that the Zoo is a nonprofit organization with little government support (unlike most large US zoos). The ticket admissions and food revenue support the care and protection of the animals. If you are able, and as a member of the volunteer board of trustees for the zoo, I appeal to your charity to support this amazing organization.

The mission of the Oakland Zoo is to inspire respect for and stewardship of the natural world, while providing a quality visitor experience. Many of the Zoo’s animals are rescues.

In 1991, the Zoo pioneered the “protected contact” methodology in animal day-to-day care, which places barriers between zookeepers and elephants and incorporates persuasion through rewards rather than discipline. The progress the Zoo made and continues to make to this keystone program has garnered respect and approval from animal behaviorists around the world, and most importantly resulted in happy and healthy elephants.

Zoo-based education efforts in conservation are extensive and growing, as is expanding existing zoological programs such as re-populating critically endangered species back into the wild and collaborating with conservationists locally and abroad in research studies to benefit animals both captive and in the wild.

Myself and few of my school teachers are raising money to benefit the Conservation Society Of California (Oakland Zoo), and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.  The Oakland Zoo is the only zoo in Alameda County; besides being a family-friendly outdoor location; it is also a well-known learning field trip destination for many local schools.

However, due to the ongoing coronavirus, the zoo has been forced to remain closed. The problem with this is that the zoo's only source of revenue is from admissions. It has gone over its current budget and was relying on its operating reserves which are about $1.9 million away from its bare-bones operating budget of $1.2 million. It is possible that if they do not get enough funds that the Oakland Zoo could very well shut down forever.
