Want to join me in making a difference? For my Bat Mitzvah project I have chosen to raise money for Long Island Cares,  The Harry Chapin Food Bank. For as long as I can remember we have collected and donated food to those who were less fortunate.  Last Thanksgiving my family and I had the opportunity to volunteer in the Long Island Cares warehouse. We helped sort all the collected food that was then delivered to many people on Long Island that do not have enough to eat.  Before this experience I never realized how lucky we were to always have food on the table and not worry about where our next meal was coming from. I want to help make a difference to those who are struggling. I'm raising money to benefit Long Island Cares, Inc., and any donation will help make an impact for those right here on Long Island. I'm Aarika Mehrishi a 6th grader at Jericho Middle School. I have heard a lot of sad stories about this COVID-19 pandemic affecting people's access to food. Especially those who are vulnerable at this time. All the money raised through this fundraiser will help poor people to procure food in this hard time. I would really appreciate it if you can help me raise a total of 5,000 dollars. Thank you so much in anticipation!

Hello everyone!!

Back in December of 2016, I was blessed enough to host a very successful Make-up Class Charity Fundraiser for Bethany House Women's Homeless Shelter on Long Island, where I received 1,000+ sanitary care products (toothbrushes, toilet paper, shampoo, soap) in exchange for admission to a makeup class I hosted. I will never forget collecting over 77 toothbrushes, and learning that would be enough to provide every woman and child at the shelter with a new toothbrush.

This time, the stakes are higher. I am asking for monetary donations to benefit Long Island Cares Inc., in exchange for a password to a live ZOOM Makeup Class I will be hosting on Saturday, 4/18/20. If I reach or exceed my goal of 1,500 I will host the makeup class LIVE on Instagram for all viewers. Any donation will help make an impact, and any donation of $5.00 or more will qualify for the Zoom password. 100% of the funds collected will automatically be going to Long Island Cares Inc. So many of us are out of work, but every little bit helps.
 
The social distancing recommendations imposed by the CDC secondary to precaution for COVID-19 have left so many people without access to basic needs, like food. Many have suffered job loss, and our elderly and immunocompromised are either scared or unable to reach the grocery store. LI Cares is providing mobile delivery meal distribution for our elderly and other at-risk populations. I hope that together we can bring some relief to the Long Island community, which means so much to me. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause.

Here is an update from their website regarding the impact of COVID-19. 
The following data pertains to the actual services we’re providing.
• We are distributing boxes of food and other supply packages at six locations (satellites and Hauppauge), Monday-Friday, and evenings and weekend by appointment only.

• Number of new visitors being assisted at our satellites during the first week in response to COVID-19 was 107.

• Number of home deliveries related to COVID-19 was 10.

• Our Supporting Our Seniors (S.O.S.) staff delivered food packages to 243 seniors during the time period of 3/16-3/22.  Total number of seniors enrolled in S.O.S. is 1,746.

• On average, our five satellite locations assist 900 seniors per month.

• Our homeless outreach staff delivered food/supplies to 125 homeless individuals and families.

• 634 total contacts and interventions with families/individuals directly related to COVID-19 during the week of 3/16-3/22 (this is an addition to the named people we see unrelated to COVID-19)

Mobile Distributions:
Long Island Cares provides several mobile outreach programs that deliver emergency food to seniors, veterans, children and the homeless.

• Mobile Outreach Resource Enterprise (M.O.R.E.)

As we adhere to the request of our elected officials to practice social distancing and limit contact with people who might be at-risk for COVID-19, our staff has been instructed to use precautions such as wearing masks, gloves, sanitizing vehicles, and not having physical contact. Our mobile distributions will continue following these precautions and providing foods that are prepackaged only through our warehouse.
