Meet Booker.   This friendly, young dog arrived to Last Hope Animal Rescue a healthy, happy dog.  However, days after he arrived from Kentucky, his temperature spiked to a dangerous 105 degrees and he started vomiting blood.  Without hesitation, we rushed poor Booker to an animal emergency hospital, where he spent the next four days hooked up to an IV, receiving much needed antibiotics to fight a bad infection he had developed from the neuter surgery performed prior to his transport to New York.  He is doing better, but still under observation. 

Veterinary bills are Last Hope Animal Rescue's biggest expense.  From the routine to the unexpected, life-threatening emergencies,  we provide the medical care pets need to have healthy, happy lives.  While veterinary care is never cheap, the unexpected emergency situations are extremely costly (like Booker, whose bill to date is $4000).  These emergencies can put a strain on funds that are also needed for the hundreds of other dogs and cats, young and old, that we take in and care for every day.

Some kittens have it harder than others. Ben was trapped at 6 weeks old with his siblings and feral mom in Bayshore just before Memorial Day weekend and was brought to Last Hope Animal Rescue In Wantagh, NY. From the start, he was underweight, extremely constipated with little control of his bowel movements. After a lengthy hospitalization and multiple radiographic studies, it was determined that he suffers from *anal atresia with megacolon. 

Ben is alive due to the diligence of his vets but most especially due to his Last Hope foster mom who is his most passionate advocate. After multiple consultations with various subspecialists as well as his primary vet, he will undergo life saving reconstructive anal surgery next week. It’s his only opportunity for a normal life.

Poor JW, a young, southern beagle, came to Last Hope on a transport to begin his new life last week. However, his life in the south caught up with him very quickly as he was found to be suffering from severe heart worm. Heart worm is prevalent with dogs in the south. He was rushed to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Bohemia where hew was treated for his acute heart condition and later brought to one of our veterinarians to continue his care and start his heart worm treatment to save his heart and life.

In the week that JW has been with us and the weeks to follow, he has and will incur significant veterinary costs. Please contribute any amount you can for JW’s treatment. He needs plenty of Valentine supporters,
