About Congregation Mikveh Israel

Congregation Mikveh Israel (Kaal Kadosh Mickve Israel) was established in 1740 here in Philadelphia. We are a Spanish Portuguese Sephardi Synagogue upholding the same traditions from 1740. We are the care givers of 3 Historic Cemeteries in the City of Philadelphia. Our 8th & Spruce Street cemetery is the final resting place of Haym Salomon, the financier of the American Revolutionary War, as well as the Gratz Family who supported Jewish Education. Our 55th Street cemetery is the final resting place of Isaac Leeser, who is the founder of the Jewish Publication Society and the initiator of the Jewish Sunday School. Our 11th Street cemetery is where Major Alfred Mordecai, first Jewish graduate of the Military Academy and later became Commander of the Washington Arsenal.
