What is First Global Challenge?

The FIRST Global Challenge (FGC) aims to empower high-school students around the world to collectively tackle the world's most pressing challenges. To do this they bring together teams from 190+ countries to engage in an Olympic-style robotics competition. This year’s challenge will be located in Athens, Greece on Sept. 26-29th themed "Feeding the Future," emphasizing collaborative solutions to global food challenges through STEM innovation.

Who is Team Haiti?

We are a group of students from five different schools in La Vallée de Jacmel, Haiti brought together through Educare Haiti. Introduced to robotics in 2021, we became the national FIRST Lego League team champions in 2022. Our international journey began at FGC 2023 in Singapore, and this year, with three girls and two boys on our core travel team, we are excited to return to FIRST Global and demonstrate our capabilities.

How Funds Will Be Used

Thanks to our early supporters our pre-travel expenses have been covered and we made it to Athens. We still have many outstanding expenses and need your help. Below is is an outline of our expenses:

Educare Haiti

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti this past weekend devastated an already isolated and economically depressed region. More than 2,000 people have lost their lives and thousands more are injured. The need for relief supplies is urgent and supporting a Haitian run organization is getting the aid to where it is needed most, efficiently and effectively. 

Educáre Haiti has been on the ground in Les Cayes and surrounding areas since Sunday. After doing community assessments, we have determined that most of the aid is focused in Les Cayes while some of the smaller areas—equally in need, are not receiving support. Educáre Haiti has put together a team of 20 doctors and medical personnel that are being flown into the region on Friday. We are proud to say that the team of medical professionals are made up of Haitians. From the beginning, Haitians helping Haitians has been the foundation of the organization. We have been able to support communities all across the country because of the countless hours of time donated by students and professionals to support their own. Educáre Haiti exists because of our tremendous network of volunteers who give of their time every day to ensure that support is delivered, opportunities are elevated, and students and communities are given the best opportunity for success. 

Being a local, community-led organization has opened new opportunities for us and we are excitedly showcase a network of people who are constantly moving behind the scenes to create a better future and well equipped to serve given a diverse skill set and no language barriers. Local rapport is strong and we have an established network that continues to expand as more people learn learn about our organization. 

100% of all donations will go to support communities impacted by the earthquake and ongoing support will help with rebuilding efforts. Immediate needs are to help support travel expenses for the Haitian doctors and nurses who are volunteering their time to serve their communities, medical supplies to run the clinics, supplies, food and water distribution, shelter, and supplies.
