Give Foster Kids Dignity – Support the Heart Bags Project!

Hi, my name is Zach, and I’m the founder of Eco Brothers, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to making a difference in my community. Over the years, our organization has provided more than 230,000 books to over 70,000 students and raised over $180,000 for literacy and environmental initiatives. Now, I’m launching a new project—Heart Bags—as part of my Eagle Scout Service Project, and I need your help!

There are 2,500 children in foster care in Hillsborough County, Florida, and 420,000 across the U.S. Many of these children move between homes at least three times, often carrying their belongings in trash bags. Imagine what that must feel like—being told, even indirectly, that your life and possessions are disposable. No child should feel like garbage.

That’s why I’m raising funds to provide large duffle bags filled with comfort items—things like blankets, stuffed animals, hygiene products, books, and journals—to children in foster care. These Heart Bags will give them not only a sense of dignity but also something to call their own during a difficult and uncertain time.

Every $50 donation will provide one fully stocked Heart Bag to a foster child in need. My goal is to raise $5000 to provide as many bags as possible to children in our community.

We are two teen brothers, Chase and Zach Hartman, and in the past eight years, we've donated more than 225,000 new and used books to all 50 states as part of a project we created called “read.repeat" and an award-winning non-profit called Eco Brothers, Inc. www.ecobrothersinc.org. We've also supported animal shelters in 46 states by supplying 6000 upcycled pet toys and supplies to hundreds of shelters as part of our focus on Zach's Planet. This year, we opened a new division called Sophie's Closet, led by Board member - Sophie F. which distributes used formal attire for prom and homecoming!

With a Youth Council consisting of 100 teens from 9 countries we are growing our impact.

Our passion is collecting used books through book drives for our local county school system to be given directly to the schools’ classroom libraries or to children who might not otherwise own books. We’ve donated more than 225,000 books to kids in our county and impacted the lives of more than 60,000 students. We’ve donated books to 60 schools and Summer Camps in the county and visited dozens of schools, meeting thousands of children.

We've led volunteer efforts for hundreds of youth and supplied more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service hours.

We've led workshops to upcycle and craft more than 6000 pet toys out of used stuffed animals and supplied thousands of items to more than 100 shelters in 46 states.

We've led dozens of food drives supplying more than 7000 items of food for area shelters.

Sophie's Closet has distributed more than 400 items valued at more than $40,000 to help teens afford their high school formal events.

Support Banned Books Week with Eco Brothers!

Many of the schools we reach have little to no books in their classrooms or libraries, and sometimes the books we provide are the first ones students have ever owned. At Eco Brothers, we’re committed to ensuring every student has access to high-quality reading materials.

Last year, our co-founder Chase Hartman spoke at a local board of education meeting, sharing how censorship was halting our deliveries, preventing us from getting books to the students who need them most. This Banned Books Week (September 22nd-28th, 2024), we're raising funds to overcome these challenges and provide new books to students this fall. So far, we have reached over 65,000 local students by distributing over 225,000 books, but we are always pushing our goals and expanding into new areas of the country!

Together, we can make sure every student has a chance to read.
