Meet the Bioluminescent Penguins students at Sakai Intermediate on Bainbridge Island in Washington State who have earned a spot to compete at the 2019 Destination Imagination (DI) global championships! Your tax-free donation for their team registration fee will make it possible! (W2 link below) 

The Penguins chose the Service Learning Challange and rallied support from community leaders including Sustainable Bainbridge to help them understand the impact of food waste in landfills on the environment  ( methane gas that leads to global warming!) and how other schools have reduced food waste. They wrote and presented their proposal to the assistant principal and janitorial staff for the roll-out of compost bins at their school, Sakai Intermediate.  And with perseverance they got it done!

But that is just half the challenge!
They put in months of work to write and perform an 8-minute performance based on parameters set forth by the DI challenge masters to tell their story. The kids wrote, costumed, built the set and performed the challenge from the perspective of the produce trapped in the trash can trying to escape to the compost bin. That's them above in the photo as the personified produce: the Tomato Queen, Green Bean, "Bob-colli", Raspberry, Strawberry and "Methane" -- who performed the "methane rap!"

The Penguin's unique solution to the challenge earned them the prestigious DaVinci Award offered for exceptional creativity (not skill or talent), for taking a unique approach to the challenge and risk-taking.  This is Destination Imagination’s most prestigious award and is not given lightly.

This team is excited to be one of the top-scoring Destination Imagination teams in our state and to have the opportunity to present their Challenge solution at Global Finals—an international academic competition where they will compete against teams in our Challenge from around the globe on May 22nd in Kansas City, Missouri.

But they need YOUR HELP to get there. Good news is Destination Imagination, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) volunteer-led non-profit organization so the donation is TAX DEDUCTABLE if you use this website to pay the registration directly to DI. The team registration fee for the three-day event is $5500 and is more than the team families can afford as they also need to raise money for travel, food, and accommodations as well.

Wrentham’s Magic Monkeys are going GLOBAL!
After rocking both the regional and state Destination Imagination tournaments, the Magic Monkeys have qualified for the Global Finals competition in Knoxville Tennessee May 22nd – May 28th.

They are so PSYCHED to be going to Globals!

This amazing team of six 3rd and 5th graders tackled DI’s very difficult technical challenge for 2016/2017and created a solution that doesn’t just solve the problem; it also tells a compelling story about being environmentally responsible.

This young team’s next challenge is to raise funds to cover room and board for this amazing S.T.E.A.M. conference. We appreciate any donation you can make to help.

Who are the Magic Monkeys?
Matthew, Ella, Peter, JoHanna, Rebekah, and Catie can drive a screw before you can say, “put your safety glasses on!” and saw through a 2x4 with practiced confidence. They have spent months designing and building a movable stage and refining their story about ocean acidification and coral bleaching.

The Destination Imagination Challenge Program gives teams the opportunity to solve open-ended S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) challenges and present their solutions at local tournaments, which can qualify them to compete at state level tournaments, with the winners of states being honored with an invitation to Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Ludicrous Lynx is a 5-girl middle-school Destination Imagination team that chose to Fight Children's Cancer! for their 2013-14 Service Learning challenge.  Winning the support of Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul as their Community Partner, the Lynx raised $1,567 dollars for the Children's Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) in March of this year.  CCRF is a national nonprofit that supports pioneering efforts at the University of Minnesota in research related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of childhood cancers.  Because CCRF matches every dollar raised with $15-$20 from their national grant program, the Lynx effectively garnered over $23,000 for children's cancer research!

And:  In April this year, the Lynx took first place in the Destination Imagination state tournament, in the Project Outreach Middle-School category!  Their 8-minute presentation of their project includes an original script of a play, with original characters, and one original song sung in 3 part harmony!!  And they got 80% of the possible 240 points for this central challenge (trust me, that's high!).

Can you help pay for the Lynx to go to Knoxville Tennessee at the end of May to compete in the 2014 DI Global Finals?  Registration and food/housing for the week will cost the team about $5,600.  Unfortunately, the Lynx, because they are now split between two schools, do not have funding from any PTO or other school organization. :(
