Derby Mountain Rescue Team

On the 26th October team members Dean, Doug, Hugo, Ray, Toni and supporter Russ are running the Leicester Half Marathon/10k for Derby Mountain Rescue Team which is a voluntary emergency service who attend callouts in response to requests from the Police, Ambulance Service, and other emergency services. Derby Mountain Rescue Team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and consists entirely of highly skilled unpaid volunteers. We are raising funds towards our annual operational costs which are in the region of £65k.

We tragically lost my little brother Gabriel on the 8th May 2025. He was the most caring, funny and determined young man who is dearly missed by our family and friends.

Amongst other things, such as his passions for art and design, he was an incredible runner. I was inspired by his love of keeping active to run Liverpool Half Marathon with him this year. Despite him being much faster than me, he started in the pen with me because he didn’t want me to be anxious. That describes him to a T, he always looked out for me & despite leaving me within the first 100m, he was always there to cheer me on.

Manchester Half (on my University home turf) will be the first of a lifetime of runs in honour of my wonderful boy, as he cannot grace the roads again. We always wanted to do a marathon together, but I wanted to enter Manchester as it will be 1 week after Gabriel’s 21st, and he’ll be with me every step of the way.

Derby Mountain Rescue is close to our hearts as they brought Gabre down with dignity, and their care has been very special to my family. Funds raised go directly towards their new HQ, and their ongoing incredible work.

What We Are Doing

At Peak Walking Adventures we're running a Charity Challenge Walk for Derby Mountain Rescue on 11 October 2025. We're visiting six of the Peak District’s most beautiful dales in a circular limestone peak adventure from the market town of Bakewell. This tough challenge takes in some of the Peak District’s most beautiful Dales on a walk that alternates between rolling limestone hills and paths that contour high along the edges of deep limestone valleys with rivers far below.

Why?

We work and walk in the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District. Derby Mountain Rescue is a selfless team, on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and run by unpaid volunteers. Their invaluable support keeps us all safe in the hills. They need and deserve our support.

Paddling for a Purpose: 24 Hours on the River Dee for Mountain Rescue

Starting on May 24th, four friends – James Ibbotson, Alex McClure, Sam Wilson, and Eoghan Kelly – will take on a gruelling, round-the-clock challenge to raise funds for a cause close to our hearts: Mountain Rescue.

For 24 hours straight, we’ll be paddling an intense loop along the beautiful but demanding River Dee in Llangollen. Starting just below Horseshoe Falls, we’ll navigate down the grade 4 whitewater to Town Falls, hop out, hike back uphill to the canal, and paddle our way back to the top to begin the loop again. Each loop is around 6.5km, and we aim to complete it about 15 times—non-stop, rain or shine.

That means no sleep, only quick food stops, and continuous paddling through the day and night. This is going to push us to our physical and mental limits.

But why are we doing this?

Because we want to give back to the incredible Mountain Rescue Team—a group of volunteer heroes who dedicate their time, energy, and skills to helping people in the Peak District and beyond.

Whether it’s a lost hiker, an injured climber, or someone in serious trouble far from help, these volunteers are always ready to drop everything and respond. In all weather, day or night, they head into the hills to save lives—and they do it purely out of compassion and commitment to their community.

They rely entirely on donations to keep going. That’s where we come in—and hopefully, you too.

My name is Andrea Rule and I am the Captain for Brailsford Golf Course. Each year we nominate a charity and for me it was a clear choice. I am passionate about supporting local communities and was

always interested and humbled by the work carried out by Derby Mountain Rescue Team.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary emergency service who attend callouts in response to requests from the Police, Ambulance Service and other emergency services. They are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and consist of highly skilled unpaid volunteers.

Annual operational costs are around £65,000 and they do not receive direct Government support but are entirely dependent on donations.

Originally, it was set up in 1964 to search and rescue missing or injured walkers and climbers in the Peak District. Their role has since evolved over time and now includes searching for vulnerable people such as children or the elderly and those who have become despondent in rural and urban areas. They also search river banks, swift water and flooded urban streets.

over the years they have attended hundreds of call-outs and have saved many lives.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team urgently needs a new base. Our current ‘base’ is an old garage, prone to flooding, has limited space for our emergency response vehicles and equipment, no training or meeting room and no hub for gathering as a team to debrief and de-stress after sometimes quite arduous and harrowing call-outs.

Our new base will help us to help you – when you most need us!

The team has raised £407K to date, purchased some land and obtained planning permission to build a purpose-built base that will meet all our needs. To complete the project, we still need a further £300K to secure this much-needed new home.

11 million people visit the Peak District every year. If we can reach 60,000 of these people and each of them donates just £5, the Team can build its new base and continue to fulfil its vision as ‘a leading search and rescue team in the community’.
