Daraja Education Fund

In Kenya, girls living in poverty are much less likely to receive a secondary school education. Daraja means bridge. Education is the fastest bridge out of poverty. Daraja Academy was established in 2009 as an all-girls boarding school providing its students access to a first-rate education.  The  Kenya Ministry of Education currently ranks Daraja Academy in the top 10% of private secondary schools in the country.

My friends and I have been writing letters to some of the Daraja students, and they are absolutely remarkable. They are smart, ambitious, funny and interested in learning about the world around them. This summer my family and I will be visiting Daraja Academy. I want to help the school carry out their mission to give girls an opportunity to improve their lives.

The Grauer School’s Girl Rising Club, founded in 2013, is a female empowerment organization that has sponsored many years worth of education for girls and boys around the globe. We are a tight-knit group of passionate high school students that learn about the struggles that affect the women in our community and in developing countries.

This year, the Girl Rising club will be donating to Daraja Academy in Kenya. Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls living in poverty. All Daraja girls have unique potential and this school is their only chance at a secondary education. Daraja is one of the first completely free boarding secondary schools for girls in all of East Africa. Providing a boarding situation allows the girls to separate themselves from difficult issues at home and concentrate fully on obtaining the best education possible. We will be sponsoring one year’s worth of education for a Daraja girl.
