Christchurch Marathon for Cooper & CRBF
Hi, my name is Mikhail and I'm starting a GoFundMe to raise money for the Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation. Cooper was one of my closest friends from primary school, and we remained very close even after I moved to Melbourne for high school. He was an incredible person, and I miss him dearly.

I'm running the Christchurch Marathon in his memory, dedicating my run to him and this cause that's so close to my heart. My goal is to not only honour Cooper but also to raise awareness about sarcoma and the vital work the Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation does.

Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in the connective tissues of the body, such as bone, muscle, fat, and blood vessels. It can affect people of all ages, but it's more common in children and young adults. Because it's so rare, sarcoma research and treatment are often underfunded, making the work of foundations like the Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation even more crucial.

The Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation is dedicated to supporting sarcoma research, raising awareness of this often overlooked cancer, and providing care packs to patients undergoing treatment. They strive to improve outcomes for sarcoma patients through funding innovative research projects and offering practical support during challenging times. They make a real difference in the lives of people battling this challenging cancer, and I'm incredibly passionate about supporting their mission.

Alright, folks, here’s the deal: Every time Collingwood cops a loss this season, I’ll be literally running the pain off—one kilometer for every point we lose by. If they get smashed, my legs get thrashed. If they lose by 50, well… pray for me.

But this isn't just about me making questionable life choices. It's about CRBF, a foundation close to my heart. Cooper, my best mate, passed away from Sarcoma in 2017, and ever since, I’ve been determined to help fund the research needed to fight this brutal disease.

Matthew Fisher Sarcoma Research Fund

Dear donors

Thank you again for your kind donations to the Matthew Fisher Sarcoma Research Fund. It’s almost been three years since his death and the establishment of his research fund, Matt’s final wish to support critical research to change the current trajectory for patients living with a sarcoma diagnosis.

We are pleased to let you know that the first round results of the IL 23 trial can now be widely shared.

The trial lead, Professor David Thomas will be presenting virtually to the Matthew Fisher Sarcoma Research Fund donors on Tuesday 14 November at 12.30 pm (Canberra time). The online presentation will be followed by a short Q&A session.

The link to the live presentation will be provided on this site the day before the event.

For those based in Canberra, IP Australia Canberra office will be hosting the event at their Amenities Room, near the Security Desk in the main foyer. Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation will be providing a light lunch. If you would like to attend in person, please RSVP to [email redacted].au for catering purposes.

About Professor David Thomas

Professor David Thomas is CEO of Omico since 2018: the Australian Genomic Cancer Medicine Centre and inaugural Director of the Centre for Molecular Oncology at UNSW. He has a background in medicine and cancer research. He undertook his medical training at the University of Melbourne (1982-1988), and completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne in 1997. He was the founding Chair and board member of the Australasian Sarcoma Study Group (2007-18). He heads the Garvan Institute of Medical Research’s Genomic Cancer Medicine Laboratory.

Matt was diagnosed with a rare aggressive cancer rhabdomyosarcoma in February 2020, and unfortunately this has proved to be terminal. Matt’s down-to-earth and caring nature for his family (wife Naomi, two daughters Vivi and Sylvie), friends and work colleagues is well known. Now we’d like to support Matt’s final wish for increased sarcoma research.

Throughout his treatment in 2020, Matt continued to be your typical chemical patent examiner and would research the patents on his chemotherapy drugs and relay what he found to his oncologist, who believed one was an invention stolen from Australia.

Given his scientific research background, it's no surprise that his final wish was to support critical research required to change the current trajectory for patients living with a sarcoma diagnosis.

All raised funds will be passed to The Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation, which is currently seeking funds for the a world first IL23 sarcoma clinical study in conjunction with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. This fund is being named in Matt’s honour.

Jess's Fund for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Hi friends, join me in making a difference by supporting a good cause! I'm raising money for Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation Ltd. and any donation will help make a difference.

Each September is global Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Cooper lost his life to Sarcoma as an adolescent.

At age 16 he was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer known as Osteosarcoma. His family, through this tragedy, formed Crbf.org.au, and continue to work tirelessly to improve the treatment options for sarcoma.

They not only focus on treatment, but support and fund research, clinical trials and patients, along with their families affected by Sarcoma.

This September I hope to raise money for them to continue their work. Sarcoma accounts for 20% of childhood cancer, yet receives 1% of cancer research funding.

Did you know...

Because of the treatments they had as kids, more than 99 per cent of childhood cancer survivors will have a chronic health problem and 96 per cent will have severe or life-threatening conditions.

Much of what we know about treating adult cancers has been learned from childhood cancer research. Some aspects of cancer treatment today, such as combination chemotherapy, can be traced to paediatric cancer research.

I hope you consider helping out this amazing foundation. I can't thank them enough for the regular offers of support and continuously checking in with me as my sarcoma continues to grow and not respond to treatments

Band Together for Sarcoma Research
Currently less than 1% of cancer research funding is allocated towards sarcoma, despite sarcomas making up 20% of cancers in children and 10% in young adults. Extensive research and trials are still needed to be carried out in order to change the outcome for sarcoma patients and their families, which is why I've decided to do my part to help out.

Ferg's Story
My name is Anna and my older brother Fergus was diagnosed with a sarcoma at the end of September 2018. Since being diagnosed and undergoing numerous surgery's, radiation, and chemotherapy I have learnt a lot about cancer and in particular sarcoma cancer treatment. Ferg has a very rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma, which is more commonly seen as a paediatric soft tissue cancer. However, Ferg's case differs slightly as he is an adult and the tumour was found in his maxilla (upper jaw bone). We were advised that his best chance for survival would be to have a matxillectomy, a surgery to remove a large portion of his maxilla. As Ferg had had chemotherapy as a child, after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 7, there was a likelihood that his body would be immune to chemotherapy treatment. Thus, the safest option was to surgically resect the tumour before undergoing radiation and chemotherapy as a precaution. Currently Ferg is undergoing chemotherapy treatment on a three week cycle, and is expected to be completed by August.

I am raising money to benefit the Cooper Rice-Brading Foundation Ltd. (CRBF), as their vision for altering the future for sarcoma patients and their families aligns very much with my own desire for change. CRBF, "aims to provide long-term funding to find a cure for sarcoma, together with a vastly improved cancer journey, providing much needed hope and support for young sarcoma patients and their families" ("Why we choose to do what we do?...," 2019). I recently learnt about this foundation after being invited to attend their annual Mother's Day Breakfast with my family, which has lead me to begin my own fundraising initiative to help assist their chosen cancer institutions and foundations. CRBF supports the Comprehensive Sarcoma Centre (CSC) within Chris O'brien Lifehouse (COLH), Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF), and the Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA). As Ferg is being treated at COLH, the foundations financial support of this hospital holds a special place in my heart as I can attest to the wonderful support and care the team have shown us thus far. This, together with their support of the other organisations, propels research opportunities as well as creates awareness of sarcomas.
