Every year, Hanifa Nakiryowa guests lectures in my Women, Peace & Security class. She is an acid-throwing survivor originally from Uganda. She is a beautiful person inside and out and my students are always blown away by her poise, grace and joy, though a victim of a horrendous acid throwing attack when she was leaving an abusive marriage. Acid attack, you ask? Yes, it happens in too many places around the globe to not kill the victim - most often women who "step out of line" - but disfigure them, have them shunned by their families and communities, and to make them suffer physically and emotionally for the rest of their lives. Hanifa is now in the United States and she started a non-profit CERESAV to help others still suffering in Uganda through medical support, reconstructive surgery support, psychological support, job-training assistance and education of their children.

Hanifa is raising funds to provide a platform for peer support and launch a national campaign during the international 16 days of activist against gender based violence which happen every year from November 25th which is the International Day to Eliminate Violence against women, to December 10th which is the World

Peace Day. Hanifa's theme is "16 Days of Activism, 16 Different Faces of Violence" to unveil the depth of this hidden horrendous act of human terrorism using the power of storytelling. The mission of this project is to conduct different events to raise awareness of the impact of acid attack violence on different individuals by bringing together different media companies, the public, stakeholders, and policymakers to advocate for survivors’ rights, sensitize the masses, and empower the survivors through sharing their stories and experiences with the public.

About CERESAV

The Center for Rehabilitation of Survivors of Acid and Burns Violence is a non-government organization (NGO) headquartered in Kampala, Uganda with affiliates in the United States and the United Kingdom. Founded by acid attack survivors in 2012 to bring light to the problem of acid attack violence and to restore a sense of purpose and hope to survivors suffering in silence, the organization has served over 500 survivors scattered across Uganda since 2012. CERESAV continues to provide immediate lifesaving medical support, facilitate surgeries and longer-term recovery, including social and economic reintegration of survivors back into their communities, as well as support educational efforts of survivor’s children — all while advocating for an end to acid attack violence in Uganda.
