Catskill Center for Conservation and Development

My name is Moe Lemire and I have been given the opportunity to have the time, the resources, the community and the family support necessary to hike the Appalachian Trail this year.  To say thank you, I want to help raise money for the Catskill Center, an organization who works hard to protect the Catskill Mountains that I love (and live in). 

I started hiking the Appalachian Trail on April 6, 2016 on the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia and will be hiking 2,190 miles north to the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine. During the 5-6 months I'll be on the trail, I will be hiking through 14 different states and climbing and descending over 464,000 vertical feet! I know the trail will be a physical and mental challenge, but I know that it is something that I want to accomplish.

The money raised by this campaign will support the work of the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, who have since 1969 led the effort to protect the more than 700,000 acres of the Catskill Park and Catskill Forest Preserve while support the communities of the Catskills.  The Center's mission is to to protect and foster the environmental, cultural and economic well-being of the Catskill region.  

Being an area that I live in and have family with deep roots in, the Catskills are incredibly important to me. I hike in the mountains almost daily. I volunteer with the New York New Jersey Trail Conference to help maintain hiking trails and lean-tos, and I support organizations like the Catskill Center who are protecting and preserving everything I love about the Catskills.

Having the chance to hike the Appalachian Trail is a blessing and by supporting the Catskill Center as I thru-hike the Trail, I know I am giving back to the mountains and the Park that have given me so much!
