my name is Savannah and In 2021, my father was diagnosed with stage 4 liver disease. From that moment, our lives were never the same. We witnessed his health decline month by month physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Every new symptom brought uncertainty, fear, and an uphill learning curve. It felt like a battle we were constantly re-learning how to fight.

In those tough times, the British Liver Trust provided support, advice and education just from a simple phone call, no matter how small or big the matter there was always an answer. They often helped us more than the official healthcare system. They were a huge comfort when we felt lost and couldn’t get the answers we desperately needed.

My father had alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) a result of over 30 years of drinking, starting from a young age. Like so many, he turned to alcohol to cope with the pressures and weight of life far too early. What began as a way to get through the hard days eventually became his dependence, his addiction, and ultimately, his disease.

And here’s something most people don’t realise You don’t have to be alcohol dependent to suffer this disease. Just drinking regularly over time is enough to cause serious, irreversible damage to your liver.

Alcohol is the leading cause of liver disease in the UK, and 1 in 5 people drink at levels that put them at risk. This isn’t someone else’s issue it’s all around us. It’s in our homes, our families, our workplaces. It’s closer than we think.

But what made my father's story truly powerful is this: after three decades of drinking, he found the strength to stop. He stayed sober for 1,417 days before he passed. That kind of change is near impossible for most. Addiction is a disease, and sobriety after such a long time is a testament to his resilience and heart.

Although his liver was already too damaged to recover, his choice to stop gave us more time more moments, more memories, more love. And for that, I will always be proud.

Now, in his honour, I’m doing something completely out of my comfort zone I’m jumping out of a plane October 2025 Yes a full-blown Skydive! And yes, I’m absolutely terrified.

But I’m doing it to raise money for the British Liver Trust, so they can continue to support families like mine and raise awareness about the devastating impact of liver disease.

This jump is for my dad and for every family still fighting this battle or any future help they may require.

In September me & my brother in law Tom are doing Tough Mudder which is a 15k mud run.

Last year I lost my mum to liver disease unexpectedly, so I thought I would put this to good use and raise money for the British Liver Trust in memory of my mum.

This August, I’m taking on one of the UK’s toughest mountain challenges: the Bob Graham Round, a 66-mile route over 42 peaks in the Lake District. But instead of attempting it in the traditional 24 hours, I’ll be completing it solo over 4 days, from August 7th to 10th, raising funds for British Liver Trust

As some of you may know my brave grandfather is suffering from liver cirrhosis and he is the reason for why I have personally chosen to support the British liver foundation. To help spread awareness around liver related illnesses.

Hi I’m Matt, I’m nearing the end of my 100 day recovery challenge. Something that nearly cost me everything.

To mark this milestone, I’m taking on two huge challenges, a Marathon around Rutland Water on the 29th June and a 24-hour running challenge on the 1st July, all in support of the British Liver Trust - a cause that’s recently hit very close to home.

Hi my name is Hannah and I am fundraising for British Liver Trust. I’m going to be walking 100 Miles In May to raise money for a charity that is very close to my heart.

The British Liver Trust holds a very special place in my heart because of the incredible work they do supporting people with liver disease—a cause that has touched my life personally. Whether it was a loved one facing liver illness, or witnessing the silent but devastating impact of liver conditions, I’ve seen firsthand how vital awareness, support, and early intervention can be. I’m doing this in memory of my Uncle Dale and my best friend Anna that sadly passed away and lost the battle to liver disease.

The Trust not only funds research and campaigns for better liver health, but also offers a lifeline to patients and families navigating an often-overlooked illness. Their compassion, advocacy, and determination to make liver health a priority inspire me deeply. Supporting them means helping to save lives, change futures, and give hope to thousands.

I will be posting daily walks, miles and steps.

On Saturday 21st October, 2 of us will be throwing ourselves out of a plane at 13,000 feet to help raise money and awareness of the British Liver Trust, and this is why...

I never thought I would be hospitalised with a liver disease at the age of 26, and yet that is where I found myself for most of the first 6 months of 2023.

At the beginning of this year I started to develop what I could only describe as arthritis-like symptoms: my joints and muscles were really sore, I was struggling to get up in the mornings and found the smallest of tasks like walking down the stairs or walking the dogs to be an impossible mission. I called my GP and explained the symptoms I had been getting, they thought it might’ve been low iron levels, however they invited me in for blood tests just in case

In less than 24 hours of going to my blood test, I got a call from my GP telling me that I needed to stop what I was doing and I needed to go to my nearest A&E because my Liver Function Tests had come back elevated - most shockingly was my ALT (ALT relates to enzymes found in the liver cells which leak into the bloodstream when the liver cells are damaged - these should sit between 7-35) sitting at 952!!

The following 6 months were absolute hell consisting of no answers, deteriorating health and becoming increasingly similar to a member of the Simpsons' cast. I endured multiple blood tests, was an inpatient in hospital for multiple weeks at a time, had several ultrasound scans, an MRI, CT scan and had 6 pieces of my liver removed for further investigation by the Queen Elizabeth Liver Unit in Birmingham.

In August I was finally given an answer. Seronegative Autoimmune Hepatitis (SnAIH). I had finally received a confirmed diagnosis. A serious juncture that brought with it a mix of emotions, as having a name for this condition that I had been suffering with for months, provided both clarity and gravity to the situation. SnAIH is when your body's infection-fighting system (immune system) attacks your perfectly healthy liver cells. It is a long-term chronic liver disease that causes inflammation and liver damage.

A whole new level of anticipation had arrived and the next chapter of my journey was about to start. I am now dependant on a combination of steroids, immunosuppressants and weekly blood tests. Never in my life did I imagine that I would wake up every morning needing to consume a total of 10+ tablets, and although the thought of eventually needing a liver transplant still very much being a possibility; for the next 5 years I know these magical drugs will at least let me be able to live a new ‘normal’ life and slowly build back up to the person I was before this nightmare all started. I will receive reviews with my consultant every 3 months to monitor my progress as well as any potential liver damage, and at the end of my suspected 5 year journey I will face another liver biopsy to determine the activity of my AIH with the possibility of finally going into remission, and leaving this all behind as a very distant but humbling experience.

Having the support of the British Liver Trust has helped both me and my family more than I could ever express. I have spoken to nurses over the helpline, and attended virtual support groups that the BLT host - enabling me to connect with other people who are living in the same circumstances.

One of the biggest challenges I face now is educating people about my liver disease. As soon as I mention that I have SnAIH, I am instantly faced with judgement and attached to the stigma. “It must be self-inflicted”. My biggest goal now is to help raise awareness of liver disease, and in particular Autoimmune Hepatitis so people like me don’t have to go through the pain and never ending stream of bad-news to get to the diagnosis they deserve. We need to remove the stigma that is associated, whether or not you have contributed towards the condition, the support should be there for you regardless of the journey. Accepting you are living with a life changing condition is challenging enough without the extra hurdles.

The British Liver Trust provides advice and information to patients and families, campaigns and works with healthcare professionals to improve early diagnosis and patient care, raises awareness of how to look after your liver and supports research.
