The Bike Loud 2022 Crew is raising money to support the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation. We'll be testing our grit and determination as we cycle, unsupported from Maine to Washington State.  All donations will go directly to support the teen and young adults in cancer treatment at UNC's hospitals.  Now more than ever cancer treatment patients are isolated and need the support they receive through the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation.

We are a group of three Eagle Scouts from Chapel Hill North Carolina  biking from La Push, WA to Bar Harbor, ME in the summer of 2019.  Without  any vehicle support, we will make our way from the Pacific coast over the Cascades, through the vast expanses of Big Sky Country,  around the Great Lakes, and across the Appalachian mountains to finish with our bike tires in the Atlantic Ocean. Along the 4,200 journey, we will raise money for the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation and promote support services for adolescent and young adult cancer patients.

Help us reach our goal of 3 dollars per mile, for a total of $12,600!

How are donations to Be Loud! Sophie used?

Let's be clear: This campaign is not to help pay for our trip! 100% of the funds raised go directly to the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation, with the goal of supporting adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients and their families at UNC Hospitals.


The foundation is supporting two closely related efforts with the overall goal of enhancing the independence, dignity and identity of adolescent and young adult cancer patients:

1) Address the unique needs of adolescent and young adult cancer patients.  Cancer patients in this age group have unique needs and we want them to be treated as the emerging adults they are. The new AYA Program Director is spearheading this effort at UNC.

2)Support research efforts. The oncology world is becoming more focused on improving medical and psychosocial outcomes of adolescent and young adult cancer patents, and we are helping UNC build a research-based program that advances the national understanding of how best to meet the unique needs of patients in this diverse age group.


Through these efforts, adolescent and young adult cancer patients and their families are receiving better care at UNC, and UNC is becoming a national leader in addressing the unique needs of this age group.

No-Shave November is an international, month-long awareness and fundraising campaign, during which people give up shaving and grooming in order to raise cancer awareness and funds to support cancer prevention, research, and education. The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by growing your hair; something cancer patients often lose.

The Chapel Hill Police Department is supporting No-Shave November by putting down our razors  and donating our monthly hair-maintenance expenses to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center!

We’ll be raising money for the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Support Program that offers individualized support for adolescent and young adult patients facing a cancer diagnosis. The program works with teenagers and young adults ages 13-30.

So, step away from the razors please! Grow that beard or mustache, let your legs get hairy, or skip the next waxing appointment. Then donate the money you would spend on shaving and grooming. And this isn’t just for the hairy-faced men amongst us. Women are encouraged to forgo the razor and shaving supplies too. Or consider letting those lovely locks grow just a bit more and donate the amount of haircuts and products.

And if getting hairy just isn't your thing - you can still donate money to support our No-Shave November campaign!

Social media has been very good to me. It’s brought me opportunities I never imagined and helped to connect me with great friends across the globe.

I love to see it used for good, which is why I’ve created this fundraiser for the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation in Chapel Hill, NC. The foundation -which supports adolescent and young adult cancer patients and their families within the UNC Hospital system - is named in honor of 15-year-old Sophie Steiner who died of cancer in 2013.
