Amyloidosis Foundation

Kevin Regan, 64, has passed away after a hard-fought battle with amyloidosis, a rare disease. He was the best husband, dad, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend to many. We hope that with this fundraiser we can bring awareness to the disease and help others find an early diagnosis and treatment.

Amyloidosis has been labeled as a rare disease by the U.S. Office of Rare Diseases (ORD), which is a segment of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is also referred to as an “orphan” disease. As a classified rare disease by the U.S. government, this means that it is estimated that all of the types of Amyloidosis combined affects less than 200,000 people in the U.S. population.

As research continues, this rare classification may change. Many experts suspect that some of the amyloidosis diseases are not that rare — just rarely diagnosed. As funding increases for research, our understanding of the amyloid diseases will lead us in new directions.

A major challenge is the current lack of early diagnosis for a patient with amyloidosis. This is a key factor. Awareness of all the amyloidosis diseases by the medical community and by the general public is essential in order to turn this around.

Kevin R. Regan, 64, of Somers, beloved husband of Lisa (Popovich) Regan, entered into Eternal Rest on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at Hartford Hospital.

He was born in Boston, MA, on May 9, 1956, son of Richard and the late Mary (Doyle) Regan. Kevin grew up in Waltham, MA, eldest of four boys. His days were spent playing sports in the yard and on a homemade rink playing ice hockey in the winter. He spent family summers on Lake Sunapee, in the cabin he and his brothers helped their father build, where he found various summer jobs to put himself through college. Graduating from Bentley with an Accounting Degree, Kevin earned his CPA and began his career at Wolf & Company in Boston, MA, where he met the love of his life, Lisa. As anyone who knew him would know, Kevin had a knack for numbers and strategy and soon became Vice President of Finance at Big Y Foods.

Kevin and his family later moved down to the tranquil town of Somers, CT, into a home both he and Lisa helped design. His favorite place was the dinner table where he’d hear from his three beloved children Jessica, Matt and Colleen. As Kevin was always fond of competition, the dinner table would soon turn into an hours-long Rummy or Scrabble game, after which losing scorecards would find themselves in the fire. He initiated the Regan Olympics at his annual family reunion; no sleeping in on a vacation with Kevin. He enjoyed Saturday bike rides or a swim out to the buoy at the Cape. He prided himself on waking up early to always cherish each day, whether it be to get a head start on his chores or go out to breakfast with his kids.

He will be remembered doing flips off the dock in New Hampshire, much to the appeals of his wife, playground hopping, exploring the fields and trails near his home, regardless of property lines, exploring houses under construction (trespassing clearly wasn’t in his vocabulary), and forcing his children through a three-hour monopoly game because “Regans don’t quit.” He enjoyed time with his family and preferred taking the backroads home. You were never lost with Kevin. It was always just a “shortcut.”

After serving as the VP of Finance at Big Y Foods for many years, Kevin later became his own boss, establishing his own real estate business. His risk-taking and perseverance were an inspiration to all who knew him.

In addition to his wife Lisa, Kevin is survived by his children, Jessica Elizabeth Tomolonis and her husband Brian of Marshfield, MA; Matthew Kevin Regan of Los Angeles, CA; Colleen Rose Regan of Boston, MA; his granddaughter, Lena Marie Tomolonis; his father, Richard Regan; his brothers, Michael Regan and his fiancé Zelia Mello, Brian Regan and his wife Christine, and Daniel Regan and his wife Rhenea; and his many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be private due to the pandemic.  A memorial mass and celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date to be determined.
