Puppy Kitty.
Cute name. Cute face. Sad story.
"Puppy Kitty came into our rescue program as part of a bonded pair. You'd expect his senior brother-from-another-mother, Sam Sam, to be the one with health issues, given his ripe old age of ten years, and his history of cancer. "Cancer," you ask. Yes. Cancer. He had it and he beat it. How did he beat it? Because both Sam Sam and Puppy Kitty (his buds at RER call him PK), were lucky enough to be in a loving home. Their Mom would do anything for them, bringing them in for routine vaccines and immediately scheduling surgery when the cancer diagnosis was discovered. Sam Sam made it through the difficult recovery process with flying colors rather than crossing the rainbow bridge too soon. You'd expect PK, who only just turned four in January, to be fit as a fiddle. He is, for the most part. Both boys are lap cats overflowing with love (literally, if they sit on your lap they're both so fat their flabdomens spill over your legs). Unfortunately, the home where these two boys grew up became unstable, and their owner was no longer able to keep them. She scheduled an appointment with the vet....to have them EUTHANIZED!! Having known these cats their entire lives, and having helped Sam Sam overcome cancer, the vet could not stomach the thought of ending their lives over a housing issue. She refused, instead offering for the pair to be surrendered to her favorite rescue organization, Rottie Empire Rescue, knowing we would welcome them into our hearts and homes.
Looking at PK you see a handsome Flame Point Siamese. It's easy to get lost in his slightly-crossed blue eyes and golden face. Unfortunately, his pain isn't easily seen. PK's veterinary team has exhausted all medicinal options on an ear that seems to be a never ending pit of infection. We're not talking just some funky gunk. We're talking bottomless puss. PK has no ear drum and is partially deaf. He's been through topical meds, oral meds, cultures, every hard hitting antibiotic, and steroids. He's had manufacturers donate medications no longer in production due to the pandemic, in the hopes of bringing him comfort. Alas, the last resort for our beloved PK is surgery. He needs something called a TECA-BO. It's short for a Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy. This means a complete removal of his ear canal. It's a very delicate and invasive surgery, which requires drains, the dreaded cone-of-shame, and more medications (poor PK!). There are various risks associated, including possible damage to the facial nerves leading to paralysis, or necrosis of the ear flap, which would require additional surgery. It will be months of recovery, but it will bring him comfort which is something he hasn't had in a while.
Despite all this, PK remains a complete love bug. Handsome, happy, and rotund. Sam Sam didn't deserve to wait, and was recently adopted into a wonderful home, where he will live a life of spoiled luxury, as all senior cats ahould. After cancer, a near death experience, and a 19-hour car ride (did we mention they're both Southern gentleman?), we cannot give up on PK. Please help us help Puppy Kitty, our "golden boy."
