CAPULANAWOMENPOWER empowering women

I'm Kyra, an anthropologist born in italy, I'm 27 years old and I live in Ilha de Moçambique since two years.

The island is a small world unto itself, an island of 3 km x 500 m connected to the mainland by a bridge, 3km long and only wide enough for one car.
It is not a place of extreme poverty, but as in the whole of Mozambique, income disparity is very prevalent.

I believe that the only way to overcome poverty is to give people the tools to become economically independent, like in Lao Tsu's saying:
“Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime”.

I would like to help the women of the Isle of Mozambique, because many of them do not have either a job nor professional skills and just try to survive as they can. In addition, there is a lot of gender disparity: often women economically depend on their husbands, who often are unemployed.
I believe that everybody should have the possibility to be independent and decide for themselves. However, as most of these women are not economically independent, they are tied to their husbands even in such cases where they want to leave them, but they do not know where to go and how to mainstem themselves. Things get even more complicated in cases of domestic violence.
We would like to help these women to find the strength of will to fight for their own lives and the lives of their children.

The Capulana is a very important ingredient for the culture of Mozambique. Women wear Capulanas wrapped around their wastes as skirts and use them to make dresses or to wrap their hair. Women in Mozambique love to give each other Capulanas and on important occasions, they all wear the same Capulana. It is no coincidence that we chose to organise a workshop for women on how to make Capulanas. The idea behind this project is to take advantage of something that is already known and important to their culture – the Capulana – and use it to help them achieve their own independence.

Our project intends to be helpful to the community of the Isle of Mozambique and to take actively part in the emancipation of unemployed women.

The aim of this crowdfundig campaign is to fund a one-month training course for about ten women.

The course intends to teach the group of women how to create clothes and objects using the traditional “Capulana” fabric.

The course will be held by a foreign tailor/stylist, who will teach the women how to create objects and models with a mixed African/European style, so that the items created are more attractive on the European market.

In the future, this project can also be developed further into a Mozambican brand on the fair-trade
market.

THE MONEY WILL SPEND ON:

ITALIANO:

Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime".

affitto spazio

viaggio aereo sarto/a e alloggio semplice niente lussi
