Camp Tewateno Optimist Club
Donation protected
As many of you know, in 2018 Girl Guides Ontario started a legal action to obtain permission from the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, to sell all of their properties. A small group of Guiders and other interested members of the community, joined together to form the Camp Tewateno Optimist Club to attempt to save this camp from being sold to a developer.
The Camp Tewateno Optimist Club was incorporated as a Not-For-Profit organization in November of 2018 and we have been attempting to raise enough money to purchase the camp and preserve it's present designation as, environmentally protected wetlands, as stated by the Nottawasauga Valley Conservation Authority and Springwater Township. On October 9th, 2018 we were granted Intervener Status by the Court. We are presently in negotiations with Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council however, we have a deadline of October 31st, 2019 to either provide them with a suitable offer or step back and allow them to proceed with the sale of Camp Tewateno.
Camp Tewateno is 100 acres in size and is situated in Midhurst Ontario, just north of Barrie. For the past 25 years, this camp has provided an opportunity for girls to learn about nature and the importance of our wetland, in a safe and supportive environment. It has offered opportunities for these young people to learn camping skills, self reliance, co-operation and about our native wildlife and plants, insects and birds while they have fun in the outdoors. Each of our campsites reflects a moment in the history of Ontario and provides a unique camping experience. Tepees and longhouses pay homage to our native beginnings. Covered wagons, Adirondack huts and prospector cabins represent the settlement and development of our province. The Georgian site was developed to honour the men and women who fought in WW1 for our freedom. On the banks of Matheson Creek, which runs through this property, there is a very special area called the Spirit Garden, a place of peace and healing, where we remember those who have gone before, and been a part of developing this camp for the benefit of the children and youth of Ontario. Matheson creek also feeds into the Minesing Swamp, a major environmentally important landmark in Ontario.
Going forward, we want to open up this camp to children and youth, of all abilities, to provide an inclusive, accessible and supportive place where these opportunities can continue. It is vital that we continue to teach children and youth about the importance of protecting and maintaining this unique and environmentally sensitive wetland area.
We are asking for donations from those who have camped at Tewateno, and know the value of this property first hand, as well as members of the public who have an interest in preserving wetland areas in Ontario. Time is running out very quickly and we need you support now. Thank you in advance for your support and sharing.
