Caleb Raphael's live saving Surgery
Urgent Update on Caleb
CALEB NEEDS YOUR HELP MORE THAN EVER!!
First we want to thank everyone for your continued support.
Caleb has been doing great up until now.
During our routine 3 month vet check and xrays we discovered that the small piece of bone that was left behind from the last joint decided to die off and try and slough off, up until this point that bone was looking strong and Healthy. Since this little bone decided to die and didn't manage to come out of the stump, it created an infection of that area including a little bit up higher to the other bone just before the Fetlock joint. Sadly to say we were presented 2 options once again a year later than the first. Surgery or euthanasia. At first we opted for euthanasia, since we knew most surgeons in the area weren't too keen on performing an amputation surgery due to lack of experience in that field, along with being quoted by one in another province last year willing to try with the hefty price tag of $25,000. We knew this was an impossible task, thus we opted for euthanasia and had scheduled it the following week on a Monday. Meanwhile Caleb stayed on antibiotics and Bute. With antibiotics the infection did clear, however as soon as he would be off the antibiotics the infection would return, which was not an option to keep him on continued antibiotics. That Monday we took Caleb out for a nice walk and some pictures into the field, on the way back to the stall, Caleb began to canter and bucking and kicking out to the point I couldn't keep up with him on the lead rope, he did that a couple of times before I settled him down. His spirit ever so strong, we decided to cancel the euthanasia for that day, Caleb wasn't giving up, he didn't want to give up, so why should we. We decided to search deeper than last year, to try and find a Surgeon with experience able and willing to perform the life saving surgery Caleb requires. We had the vet come out and do blood work and xrays of Caleb's good leg, to see if he would be healthy and strong enough to go through a surgery like that.
After receiving the results, his blood showed the infection to be under control, and the xrays showed 0 signs of any coffin bone rotation or arthritis etc.
Meaning his good leg was very strong and healthy. That Is when we began with the phone calls to numerous surgeons. We found one that has a lot of experience and has been very successful in amputation surgeries. We forwarded the xrays of both hind legs, along with the CBC count and all previous xrays we had from the last 12 months. We heard back immediately that Caleb will be one of the best candidates for this surgery, due to him being Healthy aside from the bone infection. Along with his experience wearing a prostheses. After reaching out to many equine hospitals we managed to get 2 amazing surgeons on board and a few amazing veterinarians to assist during and after surgery. An experienced surgeon will fly in to berform the amputation on Caleb, Dr. Conrad from Delayne Veterinary clinic will be assisting with the surgery and providing their facilities along with the aftercare for Caleb. The surgery will be taking place Oct25th. After the surgery Caleb will have to stay in the hospital for about 2-4 weeks, granted we don't run into any complications. Knowing Caleb, and having spent the last 13 months with this precious boy, we know if there is any strong horse able to go through this, it definitely is Caleb. He has not once given up over this year, he is full of spirit and just the sweetest boy to be around. Caleb would be fitted with a new prostheses during the time he is recovering in the hospital, after that we need to have an indoor stall to keep him in for the rest of the winter, with daily turn out into an indoor arena, along with short walks on warm days outside for some fresh air. Caleb needs everyone's help now more than ever, we were quoted $10,000 total on the high end, which includes the fees for the surgeon flying in, and the surgery and after care for Caleb for 2 weeks. Alone we cannot afford this surgery, but we know with everyone's help, Caleb will live a healthy and happy life for many more years to come. Where he can teach others going through a rough time, and with physical challenges of their own, to never give up, to ask for help when you need it most.
We know the economy this year hasn't been the greatest, everyone has been affected in one way or another. We are asking for any help you can offer, prayers, monetary donations towards his surgery, supplies he will need after surgery, or simply sharing his story.
Without having the finances secured for Caleb's surgery, we cannot go ahead and schedule everything. Which would mean Caleb's ultimate end would be to cross the rainbow bridge.
We understand that these funds could save more than 1 horse, however that doesn't mean Caleb is any less deserving, it means that those funds would change the world for Caleb forever. We don't like to ask for help, but we learned over the last year, that some things are impossible to accomplish on your own. That you have to ask for help, in the last year so many incredible people have come forward to help Caleb, and it's been one incredible journey this far, we really don't want it to end for Caleb.
At the end of the day, this is all about Caleb and for Caleb. Nothing more.
