"Bug Lady Down!"
The Reading Bug/Bug Lady Donna Watkins of York City hurt her back while loading books into her wagon, and this dynamic woman (who's a HUGE resource to York) needs our help.
For those of you who haven't seen Donna at a million events around York City, this is the FREAKING ADORABLE lady who dresses like a bug in her homemade costumes and volunteers her own time and resources to get kids to READ in York City.
She started this endeavor in 2006, when her son was at Smith Middle School and the school's reading scores were very low. She made the BUG YOU TO READ outfit and started heading to events.
Since 2006, she has volunteered hundreds, if not thousands, of hours reading to kids, giving them books donated by the community, giving them school supplies, and being a source of endless love, smiles, and inspiration. She gives a ton of squishy hugs from behind her cushy outfit.
A retired preschool teacher, Donna has endured the deaths of loved ones and other struggles in her life, but she overcomes and prioritizes her service to the community.
She has been given numerous awards, including the PSEA Human and Civil Rights Award, the Jefferson Award, and even the Key to the City for her efforts.
The problem is, books are HEAVY.
Donna was loading books into her wagon for the 3rd Annual International & Culture Festival at Kiwanis Lake this weekend when she seriously strained her back. The ladies from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority had to step in and help her, and Donna is sadly considering the necessary changes she'll have to make to keep up with the physical demands of her reading campaign.
Donna's apartment is filled with the books she reads to kids and gives away, and she dreams of renting or buying a storefront to serve as a base of operations and reduce the frequency of her lugging around heavy books.
It's about time we step in and help. BUG LADY DOWN!
The money raised from this campaign will fund the leasing of a rental space, or the purchase of a spot (if divine intervention occurs).
