Brandon Czarnopys - Eagle Project

$413 of $1,500 goal

Raised by 11 people in 1 month
I am currently beginning to fund raise and plan my Boy Scout Eagle Project. My project consists of placing metal fencing at the Shiawassee County Poor Mans cemetery on South Lyons Rd. I will also be organizing clean up and landscaping of the already beautiful landscape. Many of you have not heard of this cemetery but the story behind it is quite fascinating. I chose this because I wanted to help preserve this part of history and give the people who are believed to be buried here the respect they deserve.

In 1847, Shiawassee County purchased 80 acres of land on Lyons rd to be used as a county poor farm. It initially consisted of a single log cabin but in 1858 several other buildings were built. The Poor farm was an actual working farm where residents raised animals and grew food to support themselves. It was a place for people to work hard and earn their keep.

A more modern brick building was built around the late 1800s to early 1900s. It was partially used for people needing long term care. In the late 1940s this building now known as the county hospital was not meeting the patients needs so a new building was built which is now referred to as Pleasant View.

A few buildings still stand, and some people are laid to rest in a small cemetery located on the corner of the property. Jim and Tracey Heslip acquired the farm in 2014. They work to provide for themselves, while preserving the history, and spirit of the poor mans farm.

I will be raising money and be getting donations to take down the broken down fence and placing a steel fence to protect the property. Many people are buried here but do not have gravestones. Research has been done and a monument with the known names has been placed on the property.

I would appreciate any donations.  Thank you for helping preserve this piece of our history.

Thank you, Brandon Czarnopys

Thank you to all who have donated! The project has finished and was a great success. We were able to fund the fence, mulch, flowers, flag pole light, and rope. We had a great response from many people. I am humbled by the fact that so many people showed such interest. We have given the people buried here some respect they deserve. Thank you again!
