https://www.gofundme.com/big-sur-road-restoration-help-enjoy-the-beauty We live in one of the most beautiful & celebrated places on the Big Sur coast.  From Prewitt Ridge there are unsurpassed views, both north & south, of the entire coast.   The roads into Los Padres Forest are :  > South Coast Ridge Road > Prewitt Ridge Road  > Alms Ridge Road.  These are all 4WD roads, but with the explosion of camping blogs, Facebook & other social media outlets, our area has become well known for camping, hand gliding & hiking.  Many 2 Wheel drive cars are causing deep ruts, tearing up the roads & turning the roads quite dangerous.  It's around $1,500 just for a tow truck to show up in the forest!  This has happened many times already.  Apple Camp, one of our most notorious areas, was actually shut  down for 20 hrs while the CHP monitored the situation thru the night, waiting for a tow truck for a car that was stuck sideways in the road.  Locals & visitors alike were unable to get in or out during this time. The current conditions create danger for all visitors as well as for residents. We are campaigning to raise money for road base & rock.  Our neighbor, Fort Hunter Liggett, is helping supply some of the repair road work, repairing water bars, etc.  Unfortunately, the U.S. Forest Service does not have the budget to maintain the road.  This summer we were able to repair Chalk Peak, our only section of the road that has asphalt.  The asphalt was privately funded.  Several areas are in dire need of repair & can be quite dangerous.  One of the challenges is that we are very remote, so getting rock & base is expensive to transport to our area.  Your donation will help us fund keeping the roads in decent shape so that the local community & visitors alike can safely enjoy our amazing Big Sur Coast.  Please remember to leave no trace! Any donation small or large will help us toward our goals.  Thank you in advance for your donation - we all appreciate it. Please, if you donate, tell us where you heard about us & why you donated so we can properly thank you! https://www.gofundme.com/big-sur-road-restoration-help-enjoy-the-beauty

This is Apple Camp on South Coast Ridge Rd - before you reach Prewitt Ridge. It used to have 2' ruts. It was rough, steep, slippery in wet weather & full of "moon dust' in the summer. A real dangerous spot. People were getting stuck. As stated in my campaign story, the road was actually shut down for 24 hrs due to a stuck vehicle (pic on main story now). This is the new Apple Camp! What a difference - not to mention so much safer. Thank you all for making this happen. More to come!

New update on the road funding:

The road hasn’t been worked on since just before Christmas. In addition, the government shutdown has prevented any new work. We hope the work will continue soon.

We’ve also encountered a set back on our funding. We have been working with CPOA (Coastal Property Owners Ass.) for several weeks on a grant. Unfortunately it has fallen thru & we will not get it. Tom has already put in $4,300 of his personal money so that the road crew could continue work with rock & rock base. We will continue to raise money in hopes that we can recoup as much of the $4,300 as possible. On the bright side, already the road is much better & by the time the road work is finished, there will be a huge difference in driving the road. As always, thank you all for your donations, caring for our environment & making our forest accessible for all. Please donate if you can & share on social media. Thank You!

I just received an email from Annie who is a para glider pilot. I’d like to share it with you. Her’s is the first email I’ve received but would love more! We will be using emails such as these to submit to the Forest Service. If you have an thoughts or would like to share a similar story, please email me.

Hi Colleen:

I somehow overlooked this email that was forwarded by Jug from our Northern California paragliding Regional group and just read it. I want you to know that we have been astounded and dismayed by the social media idiots that have decided to camp on Prewitt Ridge and on our Wildcattle launch. They block the launch with their $75,000 4WD units, set up RVs and stoves, create burn pits for cooking and then leave trash everywhere. Everyone decides that they should camp right in the middle of the spot with the best view and thus, keep everyone else from enjoying the view. We have not been able to launch our gliders at times due to the number of people encroaching on the launch area with vehicles, tents and detritus that could tear or wreck our gliders. There are many areas to camp but these folks decide they MUST have the best spot so they can take a photo to post on INSTAGRAM. There is an incredible amount of human feces and toilet paper all around. At one time we approached the Forest service a few years back to request that they ticket people building fires on the launch where they are not supposed to be burning and to inquire if perhaps a barrier could be put up to keep vehicles from the view point. We also asked if perhaps a pit toilet could be put in but their response was that they didn’t have the resources to patrol the area or install barriers or toilets. On a recent trip last spring, there must have 50-75 campers all over, with RVs, vans, kids, tables, dogs, etc. One of our friends, a fellow pilot, asked a camper in the middle of launch who was building a large fire to please not build a fire there and advised him that he was taking up the entire launch area with his vehicles and equipment. We wanted to fly our gliders but barely had any space to set up. This provoked a fight, the camper yelling and threatening our friend and us. The whole selfie and InstaGram phenomenon has sent hordes of people up there to the ridge and these folks are clueless about protecting and preserving a beautiful wilderness environment. I can barely imagine how this must impact you as a resident. Please know that I and my husband will gladly contribute to the GoFundMe account and please keep us updated about the future efforts to control and preserve this special place.

Regards,
Annie
