The Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada has two mass unmarked graves in which rests approximately 75 Dr. Barnardo Home Children.  Canada's leading organization for the British Home Children, the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association in collaboration  with the Barnardo offices in the UK and the Park Lawn Cemetery, is raising funds to have a monument place in the cemetery for these 75 children.

Why is this important?

One of Canada's best kept historical secrets, the mass immigration of tens of thousands of children to be used as a source of cheap labor. Between 1863 and 1949, over 110,000 children were  removed from the UK and brought to Canada. Known as the British Home Children, their descendants alone are estimated to make up over 10% of Canada's population and yet, even their very own descendants are unaware, not only that their ancestors may have been BHC, but also what this truly means. Many of these children did well in Canada, but many more did not. Some suffered abuses, neglect - some took their own lives in dispair.  Some died of ill health.  75 of these children, who died for a variety of reasons were buried, over the years, in two plots in Park Lawn Cemetery. It wasn't until the BHCARA Research Team led by Lori Oschefski discovered these plots, in 2013, that the names of those buried there were revealed. Since that time, the BHCARA members have been researching the names to discover the deatils of their deaths, dates and just who these people were.

It is our goal to have a monument placed in the cemetery with these 75 names and on the back - the story of the  Barnardo Home Children written.

The goal is to have this monument place by the spring of 2017, if not sooner. Those who donate towards this project will be donating towards not only remembering and honouring those lost lives, but also helping towards preserving this critical part of our Canadian History.

Each week we will publish information on a child buried in Park Lawn.

Our beautiful new monument was unveiled in an emotional ceremony on October 1st. Both Bob Huggins and I thank each and every person who helped and supported this project. Our researchers are still working away, trying to connect these children with living family members now that all parents of these children have been identified. Through this project, these 75 children have become voices for our British Home Children in Canada. CBC covered the event, thousands of people across Canada heard about these children. Lost lives no longer in vain, no longer forgotten, always remembered.

Sitting here, literally with tears, simply blown away by the outstanding contributions RJ Huggins had made in designing our Park Lawn Monument and by the overwhelming generous donations the various companies are making towards this project. Coupled with the generous donations of our group and Barnardo's, this monument will be symbolic of these children and a very fitting memorial to these 75 lost children and ALL the lost BHC children. I so wanted a monument for these children, from the bottom of my heart, I thank Bob Huggins for making this a reality beyond my expectations. Mark October 1st in your calendars, you don't want to miss the dedication service.

The dedication service for our Park Lawn Monument has been scheduled for Sunday, October 1st 2017 early afternoon - time to be confirmed. With huge thank you's to RJ Huggins of Orphan Boy Films, who has been able to provide us with a monument which will be appropriate and fitting for these BHC. And he has amazingly done this with our budget collected here. So proud of our group who have all worked together to ensure these children receive a proper monument and are finally remembered. Details to follow.

There was a Barnado home at Russell Manitoba Canada (near my home town) where many children were abused, used as slaves, labored long hours, and died and were buried on the grounds in mass graves. So cruel!!!

Dorothy is not far from my grandmother. I will keep this and put some flowers there next time I go. Very sad she wasn't buried with her child.
