Bella's Bumbas

My name is Jeffrey Shorr and I am the father of Bella and one of the creators of Bella’s Bumbas. Bella was born with Spina Bifida, making walking and getting around a bit more difficult for her. I knew we had to do something and made Bella her first Bumba, a special wheelchair to help her feel more empowered. After seeing the joy the new-found freedom brought to Bella, our family teamed up and created Bella’s Bumbas. Bella’s Bumbas provides wheelchairs to young children who are affected by Spina Bifida or any type of mobility challenge.

These chairs are geared towards infants and young toddlers who otherwise may not have access to high dollar commercial chairs. We provide the chairs at no cost to the parents outside of shipping costs (flat rate in the US of $62.40).  Each Bumba is handmade by Bella’s Great Uncle Marty with support from the rest of our family and local community.

Bella is an extraordinary child. Even with the challenges she has faced, she still is a bright light in everyone’s life she touches. She is now learning to walk as a result of her gaining mobility via the Bumba and tasting what freedom was like. We want to help provide this opportunity to children all over the globe.

One of the biggest challenges we’re facing now is delivering chairs to children in different parts of the world. The need for mobility is not limited to the US and we receive requests from all over the globe. Due to the high costs of shipping, we’re a bit limited when it comes to providing overseas support. Donations made to our GoFundMe campaign will go directly to the supplies needed to make the Bumbas and to help offset shipping costs for those outside of the US.

Thank you all for your continued support! Your contributions are helping children all over the world experience mobility - something we often take for granted.

We are still incredibly overwhelmed by the immense outpouring of support for Bella’s Bumbas throughout the last few weeks. Our campaign has received donations from people in all 50 states and from 16 countries around the world. Thanks to the GoFundMe team and each and every one of you, we’re able to continue our mission of mobility.

Please continue to share our campaign with your friends, family, and communities so we can keep spreading the word!

It’s been a busy past few months, we’ve been working hard to help facilitate the delivery of several chairs to children overseas. Some as far away as Sierra Leone, Africa.

We’ve also been busy working with GoFundMe over the past several weeks to create a video highlighting our efforts to help children across the globe become mobile. Our hope is that this video will help spread word about what we offer and help raise more funding to allow us to continue on our mission of mobility.

We’re also thrilled to say that we are quickly approaching the milestone of 400 chairs shipped worldwide! It’s because of donors like you, that we’ve been able to help so many children globally. Its also been very exciting to see recent updates from some of our original recipient families showing just how much a Bella’s Bumbas chair has helped their child.

Many children have graduated from using their Bella’s Bumbas and are now learning to walk with support because of the upper body strength they’ve developed. Because of this, many of the original chairs have now been passed on to other children or to physical therapists who’ve added them to their toolkit.

Our hope is that by the end of 2018, we’ll have shipped close to 700 chairs all over the world. We can only achieve this with the assistance of each and every one of you. If you can’t make a donation, simply sharing our GoFundMe page and/or our Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/bellasbumbas) will help us greatly by increasing awareness regarding Bella’s Bumbas.

Thank you!
Jeffrey Shorr

We’d thought we would share a video that our friends at handicappedpets.com put together. They supply ALL the latex free wheels we use on our Bella’s Bumbas chairs at no cost. They, along with all of you are the reason we can do what we do.

The video feature a Bella’s Bumbas recipient, Lorilae, along with a dog that also utilized a wheelchair. It’s a great reminder that we’re all in this together!

As we approach the holiday season, we know many of you would like to donate to a cause that touches you. We hope that we are that cause and will put 100% of the funds donated towards helping another child in the world become mobile.

We continue to receive requests almost daily for chairs, so the need is constant. We also receive stories almost daily of just how much of an impact our chairs have had on their child. Remember, we’re not only helping these children become mobile, but also creating a mental drive to be mobile on their own. The chairs help them mentally by provided a sense of freedom but they also spur physical development that can lead to being able to walk with a walker.

The need for continued support has never been greater, since we’ve moved away from Bumbo seats (kids outgrow them too fast) and onto the Summer Infant Seat; our costs have increased slightly per chair (Summer increased pricing by $9 in the last month). This increase along with the fact that the summer infant seats aren’t donated as used often, mixed with continued demand means that we are spending more per month building the chairs.

We’ve enjoyed spikes in donations when stories about Bella’s Bumbas are shared on news reports, but since the spotlight hasn’t shined upon us in a while, we’ve had limited donations. At this time we ask that if you can, please share us and our story so that people looking to donate can read about us.

Thank you,
Bella’s Bumbas (Jeffrey, Rebecca, Marty, and Bella)
