Bella's Bumbas

My name is Jeffrey Shorr and I am the father of Bella and one of the creators of Bella’s Bumbas. Bella was born with Spina Bifida, making walking and getting around a bit more difficult for her. I knew we had to do something and made Bella her first Bumba, a special wheelchair to help her feel more empowered. After seeing the joy the new-found freedom brought to Bella, our family teamed up and created Bella’s Bumbas. Bella’s Bumbas provides wheelchairs to young children who are affected by Spina Bifida or any type of mobility challenge.

These chairs are geared towards infants and young toddlers who otherwise may not have access to high dollar commercial chairs. We provide the chairs at no cost to the parents outside of shipping costs (flat rate in the US of $62.40).  Each Bumba is handmade by Bella’s Great Uncle Marty with support from the rest of our family and local community.

Bella is an extraordinary child. Even with the challenges she has faced, she still is a bright light in everyone’s life she touches. She is now learning to walk as a result of her gaining mobility via the Bumba and tasting what freedom was like. We want to help provide this opportunity to children all over the globe.

One of the biggest challenges we’re facing now is delivering chairs to children in different parts of the world. The need for mobility is not limited to the US and we receive requests from all over the globe. Due to the high costs of shipping, we’re a bit limited when it comes to providing overseas support. Donations made to our GoFundMe campaign will go directly to the supplies needed to make the Bumbas and to help offset shipping costs for those outside of the US.

Thank you all for your continued support! Your contributions are helping children all over the world experience mobility - something we often take for granted.

Here’s a quick update...

We’ve been extremely busy these past few weeks getting settled into our new space and working on building and shipping our chairs.

We delivered 42 chairs worldwide this past month and added a couple new countries to the list of where you can now find happy little children rolling around in their Bella’s Bumba!

We are also happy to say that we’ve partnered with another nonprofit “NuDay Syria” based in New Hampshire to help facilitate the delivery of Bella’s Bumbas to children in need in Syria. They have taken 6 chairs so far with another 6 schedule to go out in the middle of November.

We also would like to take the time to thank all of you who have supported us with donations or simply by sharing our story. It’s through the continued generosity you’ve all shown us that we are able to continue what we do.

So it’s been a while since our last update. A ton of news to share with you all who’ve helped us on this amazing journey.

First of all, demand for our chairs has steadily been increasing and we are rapidly approaching our 700 chairs shipped estimate we mentioned in our last update. Many physical therapists have found out about us and have been directing their clients to us. This is a testament to just how beneficial our chairs are to children facing mobility challenges.

Due to the increase in demand, we’ve outgrown our original space. Thankfully a friend of Bella’s Bumbas, Ms. Lee has graciously provided us her home at a very low cost so that we may continue to grow. We now utilize her entire home to build, store, pack, and run Bella’s Bumbas LTD. Even though we’ve been given a drastically reduced rate for rent, we are taking on new expenses in the form of utilities , insurance, and rent costs that we’ve not had to pay before.

We’ve also been asked by handicappedpets.com to begin paying the shipping costs for the wheels they donate. We feel this is more then fair as they’ve been donating tires and the shipping costs shortly after we started Bella’s Bumbas. These shipping costs are in the hundreds of dollars per shipment due to the weight of the tires along with their dimensional weight (box dimensions). Even with us having to pay shipping costs for tires, handicappedpets.com are still donating thousands of dollars of tires to us annually!

With these new added costs, we will need to rely upon our donors more than ever to help us continue on our mission of mobility. Even if you can’t donate, simply sharing our story and Our facebook.com/bellasbumbas page goes a long way to attracting new recipients and donors.

We’re so thrilled that we are growing and helping more and more children across the globe annually. Our team has added new volunteers to assist with building and administrative duties and our new space allows us to accommodate us all without having to step on each other’s toes, literally!

Thank you for following us and donating to our cause. Without your help we would not be where we are today!

Bella’s Bumbas is running out of space at our current workshop. That being said, we’ve identified a location that will allow us to expand for the foreseeable future. It is also low cost compared to most locations in our area.

We need to expand to be able to keep up with chair orders and continued growth. However, because we operate 100% on donations, we fear that with our current funding, we won’t be able to sustain the additional overhead costs (currently we have no rent/utility costs) for more then a couple years.

We are hoping that many of our followers and supporters may be willing to help us fund our expansion and cover our monthly overhead. We anticipate the costs to be under $1000 a month with all building costs covered.

We have had a few people approach us about having their employers do payroll deductions for Bella’s Bumbas, this option is great for all parties involved because it is fully tax deductible. If you are interested in having your company offer this, please contact your HR department to get information about their process. We’re happy to work with HR departments to get it setup.

Another option for us is to have additional fundraisers, like the Facebook and Oklahoma fundraisers that have been held recently to benefit Bella’s Bumbas.

We understand that as special needs parents, money can be tight. However, sharing our page and our mission and/or organizing a fundraiser to benefit us doesn’t cost you as parents, money.

We want to continue to grow and help as many children as possible for the foreseeable future. But without funding, our future may be limited.

As always you can make donations via GoFundMe at:

Thank you,
Jeffrey

I just wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news. We’ve now shipped 470 chairs and have another 35 or so waiting to be built! This means we’ll be at 500 chairs shipped and children helped before July is over. We’ve only been able to achieve this because of all your help be it donations or simply sharing our story.

We are also excited because more and more physical therapists are finding out about us and having their patients contact us. We love this, because it means the professionals see the benefits that our chairs provide these children.

Thank you!
