“(Farm workers) are involved in the planting, cultivation and harvesting of the greatest abundance of food known in this society. They bring in so much food to feed you and me and the whole country and enough food to export to other places. The ironic thing and the tragic thing is that after they make this tremendous contribution, they don’t have any money or any food left for themselves.” Caesar Chavez

Farmworker Info:

In the United States, Farmworkers were excluded from the Fair Labor Standards act of 1976 which exempted them from overtime pay and standard child labor law practice.

As of January, 2020, California and New York are the only states with mandated overtime pay for Farmworkers. Both states enacted these laws in the past year.

In 2015, there were 570 fatal occupational injuries in the agriculture industry. Agriculture had the highest rate of workplace fatality.

In 2018, only 35% of farmworkers reported that they had health insurance.

Farm Employment Info:

In 2012, The Farm Labor Bureau reported 3.1 Billion dollars in lost economic value due to farm labor shortages in the US.

"More than 40% of farm owners in the past five years have been unable to obtain all the workers they needed for the production of their main crop. Of the total reporting shortages, it found about 70% or more indicating they have experienced more trouble hiring in 2017 and 2018." *California Farm Bureau Survey 2018

Our goals:

1.To give farmworkers the information they need to find the best workplaces, and avoid farms and farm contractors with abusive employment practices.

2. To disrupt a decentralized agricultural labor contracting system that doesn't effectively hold farms or farm labor contractors accountable for worker abuses, by connecting farmworkers and farms with contracts directly through our secure messaging platform.

3. Mitigate labor shortages for farm owners with the best employment practices.

4. Shift the power structure of Agriculture in favor of the worker.

Important Information regarding the Agriculture industry:

-Less than 1% of farmworkers have union representation in the United States. In the farm labor classes, the fear of deportation and employment termination keeps farmworkers’ from organizing as unions. The anonymous job review platform has brought transparency and accountability to the workplace across numerous industries. Trabajosdelcampo.com will bring that same concept to North America’s farmworkers.

Although the United States consistently experiences large farm labor shortages, the US government refuses to issue enough visas to allow farmworkers to work towards legal status.  H2A guest visa farmworkers provide housing, meals, and transportation to and from Mexico. However, due to the increased cost per employee, many farmers prefer to hire undocumented labor.

-As part of our programs, we plan to continue to push for legislation for a "blue card" which would give farmworkers a path towards legal status if they are working full-time on farms.  Currently, the H2A farmworker guest visa program only provides documentation for 240,000 of an estimated 2 to 3 Million farmworkers in the United States The majority of farmworkers are undocumented,  and unable to travel back and forth between their home countries. Their undocumented status also leaves them susceptible to predatory employment practices.
