A Girl and Her World | TC Winston

$10,080 of $12,000 goal

My name is Helena Hasseler, I am a youth ambassador for the organisation A Girl and Her World. I live in Sydney, Australia.
In 2015 my friends and I did a volunteer trip to Fiji, hand in hand with the organisation. Last night TC Winston hit the small community we worked closely together with, and a lot of good friends lost everything they had. Because these people were some of the most kind-hearted and generous people we have ever met, we want to help them. It would mean a lot to us and our friends if you could spare some money that can go towards rebuilding and refurnishing homes. The money will go directly towards the site based coordinator, Urmila's house. As soon as we can begin rebuilding it we can focus on other people with her help as she is vital in letting us know who needs the most help. The money will go directly to Urmila via A Girl and Her World. All donations are appreciated, no matter how small or big they might be!

In light of international women's day I want to introduce you to Urmila. She is the site based coordinator of A Girl and Her World, a wife, a mum and a grandmother. She is one of the strongest and most kind- hearted people I have ever met. Even when she was hurt she put others first, always made sure they were safe and had clean water. I'm so grateful to know her. Thank you so much for your donations, every dollar helps.

Almost a year ago my friends and I were here, cooking with Urmila and her family, being decorated with henna, playing games with the little one and just generally enjoying life. Now that place, a home, is gone. Thank you to everyone who has helped us raise money so far, we appreciate your generosity. Vinaka!

The people that we got to spend time with during that week in Fiji changed our lives. We had never met anyone our age as driven and hungry for education as they were; most of them got up in the early morning hours to help their parents around the house, study or start their long trip to school. The children were as excitable and fun-loving as all children are, but they were also appreciative. It was clear to us that these kids want to be educated, they know the value that education has and they know what chances it can open up for them later in life. Now, they don't even have homes anymore. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, your donation, no matter how small, makes a big difference to the lovely people that need and deserve your help.

UPDATE: This morning a few more details are coming to light as we are able to speak in brief bursts with our friends before phones cut out.

Our Coordinator Urmila and her extended family have lost everything // They are staying in a nearby school with 100's of other people and they have no food, no electricity, no water and inadequate sanitation // They are all badly hurt.

Urmila's right hand was crushed under the weight of a falling object, everyone is covered in open cuts and bruises. The small children are distressed and confused.

NO EMERGENCY RELIEF HAS REACHED THEM YET.

We spoke to Urmila's daughter in another part of Fiji this morning and we will send money today so she can purchase food and some first aid kits. She will make her way there today or tomorrow. We have asked her to tell her mum and the others that we are with them. -Jane, A Girl and Her World coordinator
