Brian & Vamsi: Habitat for Humanity

Donation protected
University of Delaware Alternative Breaks (UDaB) sends groups of students all over the USA, and even piloted a trip to Nicaragua this year, to do direct community service to combat social issues. UDaB has a way of bringing together students that would not have met any other way and uniting them with the goal of becoming active citizens in the community. We (Brian and Vamsi) are super super excited to be leading 19 awesome participants on a week-long trip to do Habitat for Humanity work in Vineland, NJ over spring break to combat affordable housing issues in a local area! Really, these 19 kids rock and we're excited for them to join our team this year.

Habitat for Humanity is a fantastic organization that combats affordable housing issues across the planet. Families must apply for the chance to receive a house, but they also must pay (a small price) to retain their integrity and attend financial classes, among other things. We are very excited to be working with them!

We have created this page to ask for financial support for our upcoming trip over spring break. Travel, food, and housing aren't cheap, even for volunteers, and while we are always willing to pay for such an opportunity we need all the help we can get. We would hate for any participant in UDaB to be caused financial stress by the trip when the goal is to help others! Any and every penny helps! We realize (trust me) that not everyone can donate, but if you don't wish to donate we just ask that you help us spread the word about our trip and our program! All proceeds will of course go towards the trip cost and not for personal expenses while we are there.

This is Brian's third year in UDaB and second year as a UDaB site leader, participating in a Disaster Relief trip and an Urban Farming trip. Vamsi is a first-year site leader but a veteran UDaBer, going on the Hunger, Homelessness, and Poverty trip last year. It was such an incredible experience for each of us that we could not imagine spending our spring break doing anything else.

UDaB runs by the quote "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." (Margaret Mead). For this spring break, and hopefully for a long time after, WE will be those citizens!

There is a running statistic that states that for each hour of service performed on an alternative break trip, one hour of planning is required: for our trip alone, that means that about 1,200 hours of planning will be put in by hardworking and passionate students on our executive board. This program is something that we are absolutely devoted to, and is an enormous opportunity to inspire people to enact social change. If you ask past participants, they will say that it has a way of changing lives.

For each person that donates, we will promise an email with photos from the trip and/or a video summarizing the trip (if we have the equipment) if you leave us your email address!
