Help buy & protect Back Shore Land!
$102,156 of $100,000 goal
Important Update: This campaign has changed! Save Our Shores Gloucester has signed a definitive purchase & sale agreement to buy this land and protect it forever!
We have just a few weeks to raise enough money to cover the purchase price of $75,000, legal fees, closing costs, insurance, etc.
Once we purchase this land, we will determine the best way to protect it forever, and to ensure public access forever.
But for now, we need your help to take advantage of this great opportunity. Please donate! Any excess funds raised will be used to protect the rest of Gloucester's undeveloped coastline.
More details are available in this press release.
Save Our Shores Gloucester is a group of concerned citizens working to preserve Gloucester's undeveloped shoreline, and to protect natural habitats and wildlife for the benefit of all forever.
Gloucester's historic Back Shore is under threat from a proposed subdivision, which would construct four houses on the rocks, on the ocean side of 166-178 Atlantic Road.
Due to flood-zone construction laws, each house would be mounted on 24 steel supports, reaching almost 20 feet *above* the level of the rocks. You can see in this video mock-up just how appalling this idea is:
This proposal is currently before the city's Planning Board, and Save Our Shores Gloucester is leading the fight. We have retained a land-use attorney, and we are preparing a legal response.
Such a legal response is expensive, and your donation will help fund our fight. In addition, donations will be used to preserve more of Gloucester's undeveloped coastline, through a variety of legal and community efforts. These may include conservation easements, direct land purchase, zoning changes, and more.
Gloucester was founded in 1623, and the Back Shore has survived almost 400 years without such development. Please help us preserve it for the next 400 years.
Extensive coverage of this proposal can be found on the Gloucester Daily Times web site.

We look forward to seeing all our wonderful supporters!
Save Our Shores Gloucester has closed on the property at 166-178 Atlantic Road!
The next step will be to place a conservation restriction on the land that will protect it and preserve it in perpetuity for the benefit of all forever.
Save Our Shores Gloucester thanks all of those who provided financial support, contributed time to attend meetings and donated supplies and materials to make this effort so successful.
On Friday, May 6, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the site to celebrate victory over development along the Back Shore, a spot revered by so many people from Gloucester, and from many places around the globe.
Thanks to Marilyn Hyde, realtor extraordinaire, for her help in securing this property.
We look forward to seeing you on May 6. Details to follow.

With your generous support, we have reached our fundraising goal, and as a result, these four lots on the Back Shore will be protected forever!
We still have a lot of work to do. We will close the purchase before April 19th, at which point the land will be owned by an LLC set up for us by our partner, the Land Conservation and Advocacy Trust (LCAT). Then we need to implement a conservation restriction, which will both prevent construction on this land, and preserve public access to it forever. And finally, we have to figure out how the land will be owned and held long term.
Then we will start working on our long-term goal of protecting the rest of Gloucester's undeveloped coastline, including the rest of the Back Shore, in the same way!
But for now, we celebrate a tremendous success. Thanks to you, 1.87 acres of the Back Shore will be protected forever!
But now our deadline is approaching; in order to close this purchase by April 19th, we need to have the funds in hand by April 12th. So this is our last big push to get us over the top. Any excess funds raised will be used to protect more of Gloucester's undeveloped coastline.
Save Our Shores Gloucester would like to thank all of our generous donors for their support. And special thanks goes to Lindsay Maver, who raised more than $1,500 from her customers at the Plant Shack in Gloucester last weekend!
Please share this one last time, and thank you again!
This GoFundMe, that my mother supported on behalf of the family, saved from development the most special place in the world to me and my family and loved ones. The land has been taken off the market and will hopefully remain that way for many future generations. Think you can't fight "progress"? Even ten years ago, this sort of thing might not have been possible. For all of its drawbacks, the internet can do a lot of good. I only hope that this generation and those to come understand the power that comes from uniting so many behind a common cause-instantly. See me on the shore in August at the Gloucester Inn by the Sea. Thank you to all.
