Help Protect the First Amendment and Freedom of the Press

Santa Clara News Online was started to provide excellent coverage of major political and policy issues in Santa Clara, report Santa Clara news accurately, timely and independently and provide unbiased news that matters to people in the community.

That mission is now threatened by a meritless lawsuit designed to silence it.

Recently, Santa Clara News Publisher and Founder Robert Haugh was served with a lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court by Santa Clara Eagle Publishing Company (aka Santa Clara Weekly) and its Publisher Miles Barber alleging items such as defamation, misappropriation of trade names and interference with business practices based on the Santa Clara News’ reporting on them.

I believe the claims are without merit and designed only to silence me.  I have spoken to many lawyers who believe I have a very strong defense, but agree that this case will require substantial legal fees and time.

Estimates range from $20,000 to $50,000, with most requiring a $10,000 deposit/retainer.

I cannot disclose information, nor provide further comment on case proceedings due to legal reasons.

I hate asking for assistance, but I believe in what I have started, and plan to continue serving the community with quality and timely news coverage. In order to continue, vast financial support will be necessary as I challenge the allegations. It is frustrating that I even must ask for support to fight such claims, but I will not back down and I stand by freedom of the press. This is a true David vs. Goliath situation and I would be tremendously grateful for your support.

Disclaimer: Contributions are NOT tax-deductible. All donations will be deposited in a separate account created for legal funds. Any excess funds raised will be donated to local non-profits in Santa Clara.

We won Round 1! The Judge granted my special motion to strike the complaint under California’s Anti-SLAPP statute, finding that the complaint was aimed at my free speech and that Miles could not produce sufficient evidence to show he could prevail.

We have filed an anti-Slapp motion in response to the complaint. The motion to strike is very detailed - over 100 pages of supporting facts, case studies & citations and information denouncing the meritless claims made by the plaintiff. We still have a long way to go in this battle. Thank you to everyone for your generous support. Please continue to share this fundraising page with those you know. Every little donation helps.

We finally get a news service for Santa Clara that I'm interested in reading and the Weekly "fake news" wants to sue them? I hope you plan on a counter suit.
