Mission Homeless Vet Empowerment

Tax deductible
The CEO of Sub Zero Mission met a homeless veteran Thursday November 30. Our organization wants to hire this vet, but we did not have it in the budget for this year. Please read this post from Al Raddatz.

“As some of you know, yesterday I met a homeless veteran named James and his service dog, DC. After some conversation, instead of giving him a ride, I took a chance on him and him on me that he might like what we do at The Sub Zero Mission. My thinking was two-fold. As a homeless veteran, his experiences would be invaluable to my team as our mission grows. Second, NOBODY, ESPECIALLY AMERICA'S VETERANS, SHOULD FREEZE TO DEATH IN AMERICA.

My offer, work for me one full day doing what we do and, if you like it, maybe we can figure something out for a longer term. His condition, "my dog and I a package deal." Done.

Through the kindness of a friend, we were able to get them a pet friendly hotel for a few days and then I put them to work.

Yesterday James and DC helped my team sort items all day. After "normal hours" and safety briefing (really unnecessary for him), he and DC deployed with my delivery team, The Blue Coat Missionaries, on our bus that we call Gemma. My instincts were right! James and DC were instantly accepted by the team and, they helped us find and convince some homeless people to accept our help.

Friends of our Mission, the handing out of warming items helps a lot of people. But, it is really an exercise that barely wipes the nose of a full fledged epidemic. 48,000 veterans are homeless. 48,000. Think about that. The Sub Zero Mission strives to be a mission of empowerment.

The solution to end homelessness is a home. The key to a home comes through a job. The means of keeping a job depends on that individual and some basic needs being fullfilled with help.

I cannot and will not let this man and his dog just walk down the street to nowhere when I know they can help our Mission.

I have offered him a job. I will work with my team to develop a budget and we will fundraise, but we are going to find a way to empower this man and help him care for his sweet dog.

Thank you to those who have offered him a roof beyond the stay at Best Western. Please give us a couple of days to evaluate our options and I will be contacting you. We need to include transportation to and from work and some other factors.

I roughed up a quick run at numbers and I believe to hire him until spring and rent a moderate home and transportation, costs will be between $7500 and $12,500 given what I know today*. Please watch for our online fundraiser as this was a dream, but not one that is built into our budget.

I know that we can do this. It is what my team was built for!"
