Lets create better ways of living

I’m Sinéad, an environmental architect, an artist, a Movement Medicine* teacher, and a woman of heart and great passion for our earth. Right now, I have one focus in my life – to help build and sustain resilient creative communities, and I want you to help me make this happen. I am spending a year exploring eco-community life as a setting for my creativity, and sharing my experiences  as a way of inspiring eco-living opportunities. To do this I intend to raise €8,000 to cover my basic expenses through the sale of my art and through your donations.

I believe that harnessing our creativity is essential for human life at this time of change, in our climate, economy and social structures, and that by coming together we can co-create better, more joyful and resilient ways of living. I am putting my words into action by going to meet the doers and makers of progressive eco-communities, learning from their practical experience.

Last year my life focus found a home in the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland and in the Cloughjordan ecovillage in Ireland, where I spent time learning about how to harness the power of creativity in community through: a differnt pace of life that allows people more time for each other, working on practical community projects and through observing community decision making processes. I am dedicating this year of my life to resourcing myself, putting my own creativity and skills as a designer, maker, sculptor, teacher and visionary into action and sharing my journey with you as I go.

I am participating in community projects and offering my skills as an environmental architect, artist and Movement Medicine teacher: working on building projects, creating community art installations and offering classes. And I am sharing details of my journey including the inspiring people that I meet along the way, the ups and downs of skilling up, and practical information about day to day living that may inspire you to take creative action in your life.

I need €8,000 to cover some basic costs: food and shelter, for materials and travel. So far I have raised €2,500 from selling my art and now I am asking you to help me make up the balance. By contributing whatever you can afford you will become part of my journey of becoming an initiator, facilitator and advocate of eco-living opportunities.

My journey began in October 2016 and I hope you can join me through making a donation and following me on my blog. Thank you for reading.

Hi folks!
After recent wonderful generous amazing donations I have raised €5,030 of my €5,500 goal for my journey this year. I am in awe of the community of support that had emerged in the last year - and I have learned so much about what community really means: how it is a support when the road is challenging, how it is a ready made part for celebrating life, how old friends are beloved foundation stones for heart sharing's and how there are just inspiring people .. everywhere: I have loved the connections with random strangers and soul filled conversation's with new friends and how I really see that our future lies in our capacity to connect and really see one another: appreciating each others gifts and talents and also allowing space for each others shadows and challenges. i really do believe that together we can create not just better ways of living for ourselves but also we can create better futures for all our future generations.

So, with just a few days to go for my first anniversary of heading out on this journey I would love to make my goal - if you feel to you can donate on my GoFundMe campaign or directly to my by Paypal - All your donations help me pay for travel and accommodation to research, learn and write about my journey to eco-communities.

Thank you all for for all the support that you have offered; in all the myriad ways.

Sending out much love from San Agustin, Colombia. <3

So this instalment marks the middle of the 12th month of this journey of exploring eco-communities. A year ago this journey felt like a huge leap into the unknown, I had no idea how it could happen. Somehow, with a community of support and the help and inspiration of so many people and places along the way I leapt and have kept stepping into this journey… and what a journey it has been!

The initial idea for this project emerged from my belief that communities hold a key to the creation of a more beautiful world for us all. For many years I had a strong sense that this was true and would say this to friends and family but it was a feeling, and was not based on experience, so I wanted to really find out for myself and go and visit these communities that I felt so drawn to. I knew I was stepping into a journey of trust: in life and in community.

My journey was initiated by time in Findhorn last summer, then to Cloughjordan Eco-village in Ireland, to Newbold in Scotland, to Eco-Dharma: a small Buddhist community in Spain, to Glarisegg, Switzerland for the Eco-village Design Education course, then way up into the Alps to Schweibenalp, to the wonderful Svanholm community in Denmark, I spent a gorgeous month in the wonderful community of Los Portales near Seville Spain, the summer was spent on the festival site of Ängsbacka Sweden and then with strong heart tug I travelled to Colombia in the beginning of August where I spent my first month in the community of Aldea Feliz outside Bogotá, and now I am on stop number 11 at Fundación Viracocha in Huila Southern Colombia.

The last few months have been almost unwielding in challenges, it’s been the toughest part of my journey so far and in the last few weeks with more challenges I was contemplating giving up. I sent out a request for moral support; for cheers to hearten my spirits.. and what an incredible response I received! Over a hundred of you responded with messages of love and support… I am definitely not doing this journey alone, it isn't possible to do this alone. This is very much a journey into the heart of what community means: in that moment when I was contemplating giving up, community meant having something far greater than myself to lean into… knowing that I am loved and cared for and that it is actually ok to stop if that is what serves. So with all of your cheers I decided to do what was right for me and leave a place that did not nourish me, I took some time off and relaxed with some lovely new friends here and gained some much needed perspective.

I finally decided to continue my journey in Colombia and am now volunteering in Viracocha: a foundation focused on practical education in sustainable ecological management of agriculture, forestry and agroindustry. I am volunteering in their lovely gardens that provide for their food and education programme and I am also working on the design of a new multifunctional educational building. I have been learning about many wonderful projects in Colombia and I plan to stay here for the 6 months that I intended, still writing and sharing my experiences as I go.

So I said I would travel for a year exploring eco-communities, I now see that it is the first year of a greater project. My crowd-funding campaign for my first year is still live, and will be for the coming few weeks. After this I am going to close the crowd-funding campaign and look for new ways of funding this evolving eco-community project. So far I have reached €4,125 of my €5,500 goal and I need to make up the balance to cover travel expenses as I go. You can donate to my crowd-funding campaign here: https://www.gofundme.com/LetsCreate or directly to me by email or Paypal, and also if you would like to contribute by purchasing some of my prints of paintings you can look at the art work I have for sale here: http://www.sineadcullen.com/index.php/for-sale/

So, I continue with a wealth of interesting communities and projects laying in wait over the coming months in Colombia and with the evolution of this project bubbling in my mind and heart. I don’t have details yet of the coming iteration of this project but I will let you know as it emerges. In the meantime you can follow my current experiences on my blog http://letscreate.sineadcullen.com/

Here I am....back in Ireland ever so briefly. preparing for Colombia and the adventure that awaits in continuing my exploration of Eco-communities and how they can inspire better ways of living. I started this journey in October 2016 and have spent time in 9 communities so far. In most I have been volunteering in exchange for bed and board. Most recently I was living at Angsbacka, Sweden, where I was working with local European Volunteer Service volunteers and some of the community on the design of their Forest Dream: the dream of a tiny house eco-village and learning what it is to live on the site of rolling summer festivals. It really wasn't my kind of place but it is a place that holds a kind of magic for many. I feel I'm being a bit cryptic; I found it a really challenging place to live, the most difficult on my journey so far, but I learned a lot and I'll be writing about it in a new blog....soon! You can read about my journey: http://letscreate.sineadcullen.com/

So I leave on Friday for Colombia and it truly is a leap of faith that is really testing my ability to stay calm and grounded. I have not yet reached my crowd funding goal so I'm trusting it will be reached in the coming weeks so that I can cover travel costs. If you feel to be a part of my journey you can donate on: www.gofundme.com/letscreate or you can purchase one of my paintings or prints on www.sineadcullen.com

This has been a phenomenal journey so far, bringing me into the heart of eco communities allowing me to experience first hand the uniqueness of each of these different constellations of people and the communities they call home. I am excited to explore why indigenous communities are joining the Global Eco village Network and how their long history of living in close community can inspire us. I'll be letting you know how I get on!

Thank you to all of you who are co-creating this journey with me through your chats and friendships, some for intense pep talks that allow me to realign my heart when the journey flattens me, for hugs, for your prayers and good wishes, for all who have purchased pieces of my art and for those who have contributed to my crowd funding. I could absolutely not do this without you all. Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!

Greetings from Spain! I am eight months into my journey visiting eco-communities and I am getting used to my nomadic life and to opening to new ways of living in community. I started out on this journey in October 2016 and so far I have spent time in the Findhorn and Newbold communities in Scotland, the Cloughjordan eco-village in Ireland. I have spent two weeks on retreat in an Eco-Buddhist community in the Catalan Pyrenees, I completed an EDE (Eco-village Design Education) course in Glarisegg Switzerland and I spent a month volunteering up in the Alps in the stunning Schweibenalp community in Switzerland. I travelled to Denmark to spend a month at the 40 year old Svanholm community and currently I am *WWOOFing in Southern Spain.
For the last three weeks, I have been volunteering in the community of Los Portales; an hour north of Seville. Day-to-day life here has included weeding, planting, transplanting, learning about composting and mulching in the garden and helping out with community chores, brushing up on my very rusty Spanish, teaching Movement Medicine, participating in community sharing’s and dream circles, attending workshops and community events and generally loving being part of life in this little community
Next week I will be leaving Spain and heading to Ireland for a week and then on to Sweden where I will spend 7 weeks in the Angsbacka community. In exchange for room and board I will be working ion the design of some new buildings there. I will also be volunteering on site for a number of festivals and gatherings that the community hosts over the summer, including the No mind Festival and the GEN (Global Eco-village Network) Europe annual gathering in July.
After Sweden I have the opportunity to travel to Colombia to visit eco-communities there: to work with a wonderfully inspiring architect learning to build with bamboo, and to work on the re-construction of some communities in Ecuador that were badly damaged in recent earthquakes. I will also be a part of a Colombian eco-village gathering that takes place later in the year where old traditional communities and younger eco-communities come together to share and learn from one another.
This whole project of learning from eco-communities is such a heart calling for me, and the work in Colombia is especially aligned with the work I know I am here in this life to offer. Colombia is a very strong call for me, but In order to continue to get there and to cover basic costs: for travel, food and shelter and keep sharing my experiences I need to reach my crowd-funding goal. So far I have reached €3,360 of my €5,500 goal and now need to make up the balance. You can donate to my crowd-funding campaign here: https://www.gofundme.com/LetsCreate or if you would like to contribute by purchasing some of my prints of paintings you can look at the art work I have for sale here: http://www.sineadcullen.com/index.php/for-sale/ (I will be in Ireland from1st-9th June and will have access to all of my art work so if you would like to purchase something please let me know within the next week!)
I am so grateful that this journey to explore communities has been supported by the many circles of community that I am a part of: by my family, friends, and my dancing community in Ireland, by the Movement Medicine Community, a community new friends that I have met along the way and a virtual community of generous crowd-funders. This journey is truly a community co-creation! I have loved exploring, inspiring and sharing as I go, and I really hope that I can continue this journey and share more of it with you. I hope you can join me through making a donation, by purchasing some lovely prints or paintings and by following me on my blog http://letscreate.sineadcullen.com/

Thank you for reading.
